I just bought this three weeks ago. The compressor does not come on at all. There is a click sound under the rear but no inflation. I removed on air coil and it look kind of dry rotted. Not sure if it is worth fixing.

I have read the forums about the strutmaster conversion kit. Is there any alternative (brand)? And the most important question is will it still ride good and pull a camper?

Thanks

If you do a google search you will find other brands for this conversion, a lot of people have gone that way and are happy. The kit will alow you to tow a trailer, but you may get a little sag to the Expy. I prefer the air ride for one the comfort and for two the load leveling when towing, but that is just my opinion I just like the looks of a level truck and when the air ride is working corectly you can bearly even notice the trailer except for the acceleration. You can find new air bags on ebay for around $100 and compressors as well, even the site sponser Strutmasters carrries the new bags for $99 ea and compressors for $155 so it really comes down to personal preference and your wallet.

I don't remember what thread it is on, but if you search the forum you will find the instructions for testing the compressor to see if it is good. One other problem people are having is the relays for the air ride, and if you can hear the click from the level sensor in the rear then I would test the compressor and relays. So again it is personal preference but I can tell you if my air ride goes out I am fixing it.

Check this thread post #4 it gives you the compressor test instructions.

Like I said it is your choice but I love the air ride and I will never go with springs. It may be an expensive system to fix, but well worth the comfort to me.

One way to think about it is your truck is an '01 so now 9 years later you are having problems, if you fix it correctly now (replace bags, compressor & Dryer (usually come as a set) , relays, ride height switch and posssibly the controller) you should go another 9 - 10 years without any major problems.

Check out Ebay and do a google search for the parts and make your decision from there.
