Last week on the way home from work my trusty '02 Expedition, aka "The Mighty ******" felt strange going around the corner. For all the world it felt like the 4wd had engaged. I got it home and actually tried to engage the 4wd and momentarily I was able to do so. I then took it out of 4wd mode and it seemed to be ok.

However, the next morning when I was leaving for work, it again felt like it was in 4wd mode. No light on the dash indicating such, but by God, it sure felt like it and drove like it. I tried to engage the 4wd mode and have been unable to do so. After doing some youtube mechanicing, I haven't been able to find much about our Expeditions 4x4 in the way of trouble shooting.

Can somebody please drop some knowledge on me or post up a link on how to troubleshoot this system? I love my Expedition and need to get this back on the road asap. Thanks in advance.

Well I've got a similar problem with my 2000 4x4. It makes a weird metallic sound when I turn and back up. It doesn't do it in drive. Also my mileage is 1-2 miles per gallon lower. I suspect my four wheel is engaging without being activated. No check engine light on, is yours? Mine also makes a wheel jumping sound only in reverse. Any one else had this on first gen?

Put your truck on jackstands and see if all 4 wheels are turning without switching it to 4wd. If it does, dont use it as driving on a freeway with 4wd will ruin your drivetrain.
