I just bought a 2004 Expedition with 5.4L 2valve (vin code L) engine with 160,000 miles on it. I have only had this car about a week and noticed that sometimes when it starts I will have some bad tapping from the engine. It's intermittent though. It could do it when it's cold or when its hot. When it has sat a while or not. Sometimes it will make the noise for about 20 seconds and sometimes 3 minutes. It seems to come from the drivers side. It runs fine and does not hesitate. There doesn't seem to be any noticeable noise while driving after the noise eventually stops.
So there could be a few issues associated with this noise right? Plugs? Maybe an issue with the head? Not really sure yet. I had time to pull one plug yesterday and it looked fine. However I'm just going to guess that this is a timing issue on that side and my bet is that it's a hydraulic chain tensioner.
Does this engine even have a hydraulic tensioner like the 3 valve?? What kind of tensioner?
Think I'm on the right track with this?
