You can't really compare prices between markets as supply/demand (and thus the fair market price) can vary significantly between markets. In Texas, for example, there seems to be a huge surplus of Expeditions and most are rust-free for many years. In much of the northeast, however, there seem to be far fewer Expeditions, especially if you're looking for something that hasn't succumbed to the megatons of salt poured on the roads every winter. When you get into ELs, the selection dwindles even further. Add in a luxury trim (eg Limited) and demand goes up because us northerners are suckers for creature comforts. :p Consequently, a clean EL here in the northeast will still fetch a premium. Auctions, of course, are an entirely different animal. If you're confident that you can handle any and all issues that an auction vehicle may present - or the price is good enough that you would even be ok paying someone else to handle said issues - then that's an avenue to explore.

All of that said, I plugged that vehicle's info into NADA along with your dealer's zip code and he's flat out asking too much. I usually aim somewhere between clean trade-in and retail if buying from a dealer with my target price dependent on what I'm getting for my money. Are there new tires, brakes, etc. on it? Is there a warranty of some kind and what does it include? Have they refinished the wheels and done a full detail that included the removal of all noticeable scratches? In short, you're paying that dealer premium to save yourself the time/money of doing these things on your own. Make sure you're getting some value for that spend.

This is why I basically never want to buy a car in may area again.

I can go a few hours away to nice climate and get 10-15 year old ones with almost 0 rust even on frame and suspension. The people there don't want them! They want newer ones so values are still same as what I would pay here for a rusty one.

I hate salt, water, and oxygen.....logic be damned!

Based on that CarFax, I would run far, far away. For the first 18 months of its life it remained at the original dealer before being sold. Somehow during that time the windshield was damaged, which makes me wonder if that was in any way related to the fact that it was barely driven for those first 18 months. Maybe it's nothing, but the dealer I purchased my truck from had a disgruntled customer intentionally plow into 14 of their new vehicles. They fixed those vehicles in-house and sold them as new. :x Anyway, let's just say for the sake of argument the manager was just driving it around and there's nothing fishy there and move on.

Note the number of times the electrical was checked. That suggests some type of electrical issue that no one could track down. Then in 2018 the vehicle was sold by Eddy's Toyota and then ended up back at Eddy's Toyota a couple months later, who then auctioned it off. Now why would a dealer auction off a vehicle that they deemed worthy to sell only a couple months prior? It just seems like a lot of fast dumps of this vehicle in recent months.

Yeah all that stuff made me wonder as well. Think I'll keep looking. Plus, we're not in the ideal position to trade right now anyways...

Thanks guys for all the input!

Here's a much better deal! I suspect you could get it for close to $20K IMHO

Problem is, it ain't here.

Called the guy on the 2012 this morning, was asking him about trade for my 08, and he said he probably wouldn't be able to give me more than auction price for it. Said the cam phaser issue drives the prices down on the earlier 3-valves.

Like I said, think it's gonna be a pass.

Are you guys financing these trucks without the manufacturer warranty!??

So you’re making car payments AND paying for repairs?

These two things have, literally, nothing to do with one another. Besides, the B2B is only 36-mths/36K (~2 years for many people), whereas the average car loan in 2018 was 69.5 months. That means virtually everyone that is financing is doing so without the manufacturer warranty.

Well, went and looked at the 2012 today. Was really impressed, it seemed to be in great shape. Rockers looked great, powered running boards worked, no peeling paint that I saw right off... Took it on a test drive, seemed to run good. Sunroof and everything worked, heated seats worked (those are NICE). But, here's the thing. I trust the one I have just as much or more than I'd trust this '12. Got back in mine after the test drive and liked it just as much.

We don't NEED the extra room yet, so I think we'll drive ours for awhile yet.

If someone else is looking to upgrade, I would recommend giving that one a look. I posted the link earlier in this thread.

If the difference is 6 or 7 grand AND a rust-free truck, it might be worth a detour to Texas

I will never buy used from the rust belt. I'll buy from the south near an airport. Fly down and drive back. I'll pay for an independent mechanic usually at firestone to go over the vehicle 1st.

If I see a registration in any snow/salt state that vehicle is deleted from my list. I'll likely have my Expy for quite awhile as I live in a rust state and know it's now devalued because of it.

You can do better.

Here is a search of 2010 above Expedtion EL 4x4 with less than 150,000 miles, max price $22,000

https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for...y=derivedpriceASC&numRecords=25&firstRecord=0

Here is the same search with 2015 and above (ecoboost years).
https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for...y=derivedpriceASC&numRecords=25&firstRecord=0

Always check the carfax and have a local mechanic look at it. I forget how much Firestone charges it might be $25 (call them to verify) but I have turned down vehicles when the mechanic found issues I didn't see. Worth losing $25 vs spending thousands in repairs.

If the dealer won't take it to the mechanic for an evaluation or let you do it, walk away.

Thing is the low miles are attractive on the one I linked. There is another one local to me with twice the miles and they're still asking $18k for it. It's pretty rough, too.

Haven't looked at this one yet.

I have the exact same vehicle with a few more miles and I value it at exactly that price.
I love the vehickle!
Mine is in the NY rust belt but I have very little to no rust due to how I've cared for it.
What's your personal take on the 5.4 vs the Ecoboost?

Never had or even ridden in an Eco-or-Boost powered vehicle, so not qualified for valid opinion.

However, I do have an opinion from reading things (of course).
EcoB probably (almost definitely) gets better gas mileage if you drive it for Eco.
Have owned 3 5.4 Expy's, have 2 now, always been satisfied. Fan of 5.4 V8.
Suspicious of added parts reliability (TT) I don't need since I drive slow & defensive & rarely tow.

I like the model year 2014 … they started putting too many gizmo features on after that
I bought mine at 34K miles for $34K dollars in 2015
So I guess it cost me about $300 a month (depreciation) to own so far … about right I guess

the linked vehicle is shown with 17 wheels, mine has 18 - bet its really 18?

Yep 18" same wheels as I have on my current ride.

Thanks for your input. I'm a fan of the 5.4 as well.

Around me there isn’t much of a price delta between an original 3rd gen or the refreshed one, pretty close. That seems like a fair deal to me.

The XLT Premium is pretty much what came after Eddie Bauer......pretty similar. Only things you can’t get on XLT premium that the Eddie Bauer has is the dual tone leather and wood grain shifter that came with the package. Personally looked at a 2013 XLT Premium but it was rode pretty hard. I didn’t need a payment at the moment and my insurance company took almost a month to pay out on old red so I was on my own....ended up finding another 2007 in good shape with new rocker panels done and jumped on it. Otherwise I would have likely done something like what you are looking into, pretty well equipped for the money.

Thought I'd bump this thread back up instead of starting a new one.

Just torn whether to spend the money for an EcoBoost or stick with the 5.4. Right now I seem to trust the V8 over the V6, but maybe I'm in error.

Take a look at the above link and see what you all think.

Thanks in advance.

It seems the EcoBoost can be plenty reliable in the long haul, if cared for..
