I traded an 09 nav with 156k on the odo. Same engine and trans as your 14. The tranny wpuld slip every now and again, but i knew it neesed a tranny fluid flush and i was plannin on trading it anyway. Other than that and some abnormal body shimmers, she drove like a dream.

Spoken like a true financial advisor! I will definitely take your comments in to consideration when I make my decision. The next question is probably a new thread ... I never had an Expedition before. I seemed to have put more than my fair share of transmissions in Ford vehicles.

Everyone of these with the exception of the Lincoln had a little over 100K on them. How are the transmission in the 2014's?

6R80 in the expy is a very strong transmission, it’s got a good name. Many go upwards of 200k-300k miles.

Keep in mind that the 10 speed transmission in the 2018 Expedition is not strictly a Ford transmission as it was co-developed with GM and shows up in the 6.2L powered Suburbans and a host of other vehicles.

That I know ... should I be scared of the new tranny? I typically know it is not the best to be the first kid on the block with technology .... having said that... I also have a 2012 Focus that I purchased in its first month out with the "New" dual clutch. Lots of people had nightmares with it ... but I still own it with no issues at 125K.

Based on the additional info from the OP, for me it would be a no brainer to just keep the 2014 and invest the extra amount you’d be spending on a new (or increased) car payment to save toward a down payment in a few years. Trading in now to avoid further depreciation almost never makes good financial sense. You’ve already taken the biggest depreciation hit and the yearly depreciation going forward is a minute fraction compared to what it was up until now and especially against what it would be by upgrading to a 2017 or 2018+ at this point. If wifey is happy with her 2014, just let her keep it until it gets totaled or starts giving you major problems. You’ll have a big ol’ pile of cash saved up by the time she actually needs something new.

I'm having a little trouble understanding this $50,000 car stuff.

With $50,000, I can buy a half-million dollar two family house, rent it out and get $ 1,500 profit each month. If I keep it for ten years, I will have made $180,000 in rent and could sell the place and make another $250,000 profit.

Do this a few times and I won't ever have to work again.

So why does someone spend $50,000 on a depreciating item when for maybe $12,000 he can get something that looks the same and does the job equally well?

Would you please show me the $12,000 vehicle which will last another 15-20 years and 150k-200k miles, tow 6000lbs while seating 6 people and carrying some of their stuff, and the ability to handle unmaintained fire roads and 10-15" of fresh snow? 'Cause spending $12k every 4 years is more expensive than spending $50k every 20... And that's before we get to downtime and the lost time of car shopping every 4 years.

Many actually, you can pick up a decent used well taken care of truck that will last a long time for 12k and do all you describe. Many of our members here do just that.

2006-2009 ram Cummins.... more likely will be around 15-20k with 150k miles on it and able to go 400-500k with basic maintanence.

5.4 with the previous 4 speed was kind of a slug compared to the eco sure, but the 6 speed really woke it up in the 3rd gen. The EcoBoost is def quicker but not by a whole lot. With power output comparable in the same gen, your not “upgrading” all that much. Here is a 5.4L 4 speed vs 6 speed action that highlights the difference, same motor. Besides that both great motors, but I don’t think speed and racing is #1 priority on the expy lol. I’d honestly keep the 14,.


Have you ever towed with the two? It's night and day difference. Both can pull, but the 5.4 has to get up to 3,000-4,000 RPM to get to the torque, so if you like having your engine scream at you across the country, go keep the 5.4. The '2015-2017 pull happily at 2,000 RPM in the same terrain, and the 2018 pulls about the same or slightly less RPM. I've tried them all pulling my 6,000 pound travel trailer at 70MPH on the freeway and the ecoboost calmly tows as if it's on a Sunday drive. No comparison to the 5.4L regardless of off the line acceleration which is the only point I agree with you. I'm not driving an Expedition for a sports car, I'm driving it to haul people, stuff, and TOW.

The 5.4L Triton/ 6 speed excels as a truck powertrain and is great at towing/ hauling. Frankly 6k pounds isnt much for this powertrain combo, often won’t be felt on a highway drive. 5.4 makes its peak torque in the mid 3,000 RPM range (Low for a V8) it’s not a rev happy engine as it’s long stroke/ over square. Not a screamer like you describe by any means, handily outperforms the 5.0 Coyote and 5.3 Vortec motors in this regard as all it’s torque is in the mid range and more of it instead of high up. Often it’s cruising in 5th/ 6th gear like you describe of the ecoboost. While I agree the EcoBoost has a great torque curve let’s be realistic, the 5.4L was used up to F-350.... it will tow much more than an expy can handle and comfortably. Not dissing the 5.0, it does just fine if you let it rev.

Pulled the trigger on the 2017 today. Thank you all for your input. It came down to the price of the 2018's vs the price of the 2017. All of the 2018's I looked at had sticker prices near $80K .... and some where $80+.

I think you made the right choice congrats. The new ones are expensive and there aren’t many around.

Why sales arent as good as they could be...dealers only keep xlts, but a few around me have a few ltds and plats thats been sittin for sometime.

I agree, it seems my dealer hasn’t been ordering many. Seems like the few they do sit for a long time. I think they just want too much money and aren’t negotiating enough to get them off the lots, good cars but they aren’t very competitive on pricing.

A comparable GM product is more expensive last time I crossed shopped it against my 2014. Not sure about now.

Still the case...a gm truck is more expensive if fully loaded, but gm offers options a la carte and offer bettwr incentive since they are older
