I currently have a great 2011 F150 Lariat 4x4 first gen 3.5 EcoBoost, but unfortunately it now has way over 250,000 miles and while I’ve never had a major repair I know I’m on borrowed time.

I’m looking at either a King Ranch or Platinum Max 4x4 with the towing package. I’m curious if any of the new F150 features will migrate to the Expedition. Hopefully a larger screen, sync 4, possible hybrid, tweaks to the 3.5 etc. Ford’s had a lot on its plate with all the new launch’s but when you’re spending $75 - 80K and drive vehicles as Long as I do I think the worse type of buyers remorse would be to purchase a ‘20 and then see the 21’s are what I would have wanted.

If the 2021’s are unchanged then I could see purchasing now. I need those of you with the sweet inside scoops to share some knowledge!

Everything I've seen is rumors at this point. The only thing I've heard that seems like a dramatic difference would be the availability of the 3.0L PowerStroke (which seems quite likely) and a hybrid model (which seems a little less likely, but hey...what do I know).

At the end of the day, from what we're seeing from other major manufacturer 2021 announcements ...and based on my hem-hawing recently between the GM and Ford full-size SUVs ...there is certainly no pressure on Ford to dramatically redesign the late-model Expy, or offer it in a hybrid. I think the trend is with full-blown EVs, and other than the mainstays like the Prius and Honda hybrids, I think we're going to start to see a refocusing on 100% EV vehicles. Personally, when the Tesla Model S is available next year in a 7-passenger, that's probably what my wife's vehicle will be upgraded to ...and if my favorite HD EV platform ever becomes a reality (the Atlis XT), it's likely in my future too.

Sorry for diverging a bit ...but my point is, I'm not sure I'd expect too many hybrid vehicles that tip the scales over 5500# curb weight in the immediate future.

The other thing to think about is it would be highly unusual for Ford to make any major changes to a generational model until at least 5 model years have transpired. I'm not saying they haven't done it, but their history is that they stick with most designs for 6-10 years (largely influenced by customer demand / feedback).

The 3.0L PS Diesel is a CRAP motor and a joke in comparison to the 1/2 Ton diesels in GM or RAM. It is merely there so Ford can say they offer one.

Expedition lags behind the F-150 by 2-3 years. So Maybe 2022 or 2023 Models will see a change.

Might see Sync4 before the model refresh, but probably not. There are many of us that will see if Sync 4 can be loaded on current APIM’s but only time will tell.

2021’s will be the same as 2020’s with maybe a few small tweaks and a special edition.

I'm actually highly dubious of ALL of the small-displacement diesels (in anything but a mid-sized sedan). I seriously tossed around trying to find an old Excursion with the 7.3L Powerstroke, but decided it was time for a modern whip. If Ford (or GM) ever pulled their heads out far enough to see that there are a TON of full-size SUV buyers ......IF they had a 3/4-ton platform AND offered the 6.7L Powerstroke / 6.6L Duramax, they couldn't keep those buggers in stock. I get the "trend" ...but it seems to me like that's more propaganda than truth. I know for a fact that if GM still offered their Tahoe / Suburban / Yukon on a 3/4-ton platform, that's exactly what I would have got ...even if the Expy had more features and amenities. There ARE still plenty of people that put less than 5-6K on a rig and want something TRULY capable.

I do believe we'll see that in an EV someday (soon), but the hurdle to overcome is that a lot of us boondock and get pretty remote quite a lot. Gonna be tough to convince someone that likes to get 150-200 miles "in the boonies" that they can do it with an EV truck / SUV ......I could, for about 75% of my uses (but not all).

The my2021 order guide wont be released until september timeframe. All the above is true in regards to ford and the expy, most likely wont see any real changes until 2023. The diesel may drop this yr or next just because gm will offer it but from that engine has not been a critical darling at all, its only saving grace would be to offer at or near 30mpg. Also, i think sync 4 probably wont be offered 2021, but im sure people will find a way to download it soon. However, once the wagoneer drops next year, im sure ford is gonna pull out all the stops on their redesign or refresh. Last i heard, the refresh was sched for 2023 and full redesign 2026, but it seems like ford pushed alot of their sched back some due to financial straights the past few yrs.

Everything that's been said is about what I've gleaned from the web also. So I guess my plan will be to wait until the Order Guide drops and purchase then. I'd like to wait for the refresh but there's too many miles on the F150 and too many places to see and drive to wait.

Now if anyone can tell me if I'll be tailgating and watching college football this fall...

At least Edmond is a nice place to tool around if nothing is played. I’m betting the changes will be so minimal given the pandemic holding things back that you can just scoop up a deal on a 20 and miss nothing.

I don't think we'll see any changes for at least two years. Maybe lease a 2020? You'll likely not want the first of the new model anyway.

Todays diesels are WAYYYYY too complicated, don't buy them unless you are ok repairing them ALOT. All manufacturers.
My buddy just grenades his 2nd ram EcoDiesel. Spit the connecting rod out the block the second time in 25,000 miles.

Even when you take away reliability, remember that diesels cost a fortune to maintain compared to a gas vehicle! My older diesel Land Rover (funny enough it had the 3.0L Powerstroke Ford engine) required $750 in maintenance every 15K miles, mostly from a fuel filter change and DEF refill.

Yup, my dad’s EcoDiesel spit the rods out twice. Took a couple months to get a crate engine both times. Lost a HP fuel pump and it set at the dealer for 6 months or more. But those cam phasers are a really huge problem over here. Scary problems with the EcoBoost. Hahaaaa.

Why not get a new f-150?

I've driven pickups since my first 1970 F100 short bed sport with no power ANYTHING. I did have a 1988 Bronco Eddie Bauer that caught on fire and yes, I did turn my Bronco into a Blazer... I also had a first year Expedition that the wife drove and really liked.

Short reason is I'm retired, am traveling much more and want something that I can take kids and grandkids on day trips. Especially tailgating for football/basketball/college baseball games. Oklahoma State is about an hour away and I like to take the kiddo's (my goal is to spend time with them while they still like me...). My avatar is my current 2011 Lariat so I keep vehicles a long time and the older I get the less I'll need a truck and if I have to haul something like a load of dirt or gravel or anything grungy I have a 10X5 trailer that dumps. Finally, as well as the F150 rides, the Expedition is much smoother.

Bonus points, the wife really, really likes it.

Glad to hear that. Congratulations! Any major issues or did anything special to get that many miles on it. Why are you worried you can't get another 100k out of it?

Mobil 1 every 5K, regular maintenance and garage parked. Sun and Oklahoma heat will take a toll on anything, except maybe tornadoes and hail storms...

in ten years I’ve replaced only a water pump and a transmission module of some sort (hard 1st to 2nd shift). I’m just worried the next repair will be $$$$.

My last 2001 Lariat 5.4L had 318K with the same oil, maintenance, etc. when I bought the current one. I no longer have to put the miles on my vehicles that I used to (retired). Now just fun miles.

It would be nice if the 2021 F150 interior upgrades went into the 2021 Expeditions also. This would really help them keep ahead of GM and Jeep.

Ford media web site shows no major Expedition changes for 2021. The rumors of a hybrid, with a V6 'powerboost' engine. If things couldn't get worse...
