How obvious is this issue when it happens?
Mine exploded on a road trip. If this happens you will not miss the knocks and rattles from the front end over sharp bumps. The whole control arm was soaked with oil

So is this a common issue with the XLTs? I have a fleet of base model Ford's and never had an issue. I just bought my 19 Expy FX4 and really don't like the body sway and already debating on Bilstein 5100 for it.

EVERY one WITHOUT the 302A or Platinum has these shocks/struts.

It can be subtle to very obvious. Our rear passenger blew out completely and Everytime you hit a bump with that wheel it would shoot the steering wheel to the left hard. On the highway it was always trying to throw you into another lane, so it made it very sketchy to drive.

Just purchased a 2019 XLT with the tow package. less than 400 miles and 3 of the 4 are leaking oil. Service manager tried to say it was not a known issue, then had to tell me the replacements are on backorder with no date committed to. And it is not a problem? What a bunch of crap.

Thats why you buy the CCD equipped units. or Bilsteins!

Shouldn't be the case. If somebody in Ford is doing proper cost-benefit analysis, they will realize that paying $10 for a better shock absorber will save them $100 in customer repair down the road.

That's true, but how many customers even realize the shock is blown? I'm surentheirncost analysis takes all that into consideration and Ford still ends up making a ton of money.

Absolutely, I bet half of the base models are running around on them leaking and they'll run out their warranty before they file a claim and its money SAVED as far as Ford's concerned!

Update from my earlier post. Rear strut went completely empty and was causing serous ride issues. Dealer agreed to replace it while the fronts are on back-order. The good news - ride quality did improve. The bad news, now all 4 (including the new one right out of the box) are leaking and on back order. This has got to be a known problem and Ford is not doing a darn thing about it.

Took mine to get an oil change at jiffy lube and they told me the front shock was leaking. Took it to ford to have it looked at(and other issues they told me about) and the dealer told me "we can check for you but if its not leaking, youll have to pay us $150 for diag" i said wait, it should be a warranty item, and they said it is but we have to see of theres a problem. I was like, its leaking you can see it for yourself, then she said yea but we havent seen it and need to take it back. I told em forget it, im turning it in in less than a mnth ill let it be someone elses problem. I also told the dealer about my mirrors and she said they would run the system program update. Got the truck back, mirrors still pop, she forgot to get them to run the update.

It’s so upsetting to keep reading these crap dealer stories... we are interested in this upcoming Bronco but I refuse to get this type of treatment when forking out big money.

I ordered and bought a new 2015 Ford Expedition Limited 4x4. During the first oil change at the dealer, the technician found the RF shock leaking.

It was ordered and remained on back-order for about six weeks. It eventually arrived and was installed under warranty.

More than four years later - I see poor quality shocks are still being installed on expensive new Expeditions, and Ford is unable or unwilling to keep them in stock.

Doesn’t say much good about Ford.

those are some awesome shocks. Can’t remember the model number I settled on for my f350. But they were worth every single penny.

I know right!

My dealer was great when I had my issue with the electrical system.

I told them that this will be a working vehicle and not just a glorified soccer mom run around town SUV. Because of that, I want a new one. Within two days, I had a new one with the exact same specs. Very, very happy with the outcome. I feel bad for those who have dealers not willing to help them with stuff that should be covered under warranty and truly defective.

Agreed. My Lincoln dealer is fabulous but I don’t know anything about the Ford dealer right next door... they are different names so I assume they aren’t affiliated. If we buy a Ford product from the Ford dealer I’m going to see if I can have my Lincoln dealer do any of the service.

Icons are cool but have very short rebuild periods. Which is why you see lots of Icons on the used market. People get them then realize the rebuild comes up quick and costs more $$ and they decide to sell em.

Any shock builder can rebuild them for less than buying a new OEM shock. I had a Ford Raptor and the factory shocks where slated for rebuild anywhere from 10k miles to 50K miles depending use. Some places have a shock exchange program. I live in Utah and could just go to Las Vegas and drop it off for the day. Small price to pay for non disposable performance.

I’m sure they will be happy to for a 130% markup over the Ford dealer next door
