4.6l Engine Swap?

Hey guys I'm new to the forum, and defiantly new to swapping motors XD.
But my expy is about to die on me and I want an upgrade/project. My plan is to buy a motor(opinions are MORE than welcome), break it down and rebuild it(not a crazy 5millon ponys).

Back on topic, I was wondering if anyone has done an engine swap on a 4.6, what they swapped, how difficult was it and most importantly was it worth it?

I'm very intrigued by this. And that's what I'd love to do, but I don't think I have the know how to do it but I've been reading a lot about it and everything seems simple enough until PATS, PCM and tunning. I know nothing about anything of theses things nor what they are.

Keeping that in mind, when I do the actual swap ill have to be able to do it within 3 to 5 days max (but Ill have all day every day until its done.) And i don't know if that's even reasonable.

3-5 days may or may not be enough time. it sounds like you are new to this and with all things new it take more time. I have done at least 30 motor swaps, easy and hard. There are so many thing to talk about.. TOOLS, equipment. On a "standard' swap i would (me) plan on 1 good day (12-16 hours).. it could take less, it could take alot more. For you I would suggest a straight swap for speed and easy. Of course do what you will. A good hoist, the right tools ( air) can make it easier.. on the expedition i would plan for:

#1 Exhaust, broken bolts.. fixing this can take HOURS.. its quite possible to add a day for this in extreme cases or unprepared cases, even more time). this sill be your Number one headache.

there is just so much to go into.. But a simple straight swap.. label all conections ( i use a digitla camera too, take lots of shots of conections) exhuast doesnt give you fits.. and no other unforseen problems I owuld say 2 days would be about right for a "NEW' person (again, dpeneding on you tools and abilities to do this type of stuff).

The engine on a expy is really back and under the cowl, it may require some extra work becuase of htis, as I have not done a swap i dont know.. research on that would be good. As I have worked with the exhuast.. I know what a pain it can be..

let us know how it goes if you do it.. and dont be suprised if it takes way longer then you figured.

Is the 4.6 in my expedition the same as a 99 gt 4.6? if so I could buy a mustang block and build that up and that would be a simple swap correct?

I sure do appreciate the help, I also would like to say this is by far the best forum I've been on. Its nice to see people who love the 1st gen expedition as I do.

hopefully somebody else will chime in.. Im not a expert on FORDS.. ask me about GM swaps and i could tell ya.. I have heard there are some differnet heads which could mean different Intakes (problems) and some exteriro parts may not have locations to blot back onto (problems) also it sounds like Wireing may be an issue too.. I DO "think" any 4.6 out of a pickup of hte same year should work. I know they did some diffenrt stuff with ingnition in there (standard coils and wires, or COPS) whichcould mean diffenrt wiring harness too..

For a firs t time eneinge swap i would look for an exact match so its just unblot and re- bolt back in.

Again some of the guys here know a heck of alot about these things so they should have much more info then I will.

Yeah I am hoping some one can help me out. I am defiantly new and am very intrusted in doing this, but I also want to build the engine out. I'm not too excited about just a stock swap. Idk if anyone can help I'm up for any ideas I just wouldn't mind a helpful walk through. My dads done plenty of swaps but the main thing is the wiring for him. Which is my big hold up also. Like the v10 swap I want to do that so badly and the actual motor swap I could do, its the pats and tuning and stuff on that end that I'm so worried about. But I have the funds and the time(I own my own business so when it comes down to it I can make what ever time is need. Its the electronics that get me.

Just do V10 Swap there's a good write up link here on the forum, if you've got the time. The electronics aren't that hard. Just find some one in the area that can tune your computer after the swap.
