97 engine compared to others?

I have a 2000 F-150 that might need and engine as I have 0 compression in cylinder 8.

What is different on a '97 that makes it a stand alone year from 98-00. W is the 8th digit of the vin if that helps. I have access to a '97 engine, thats why I ask.

I don't know a whole lot about these engines just yet, but I do know the 97-98 models use non-PI(performance increase) heads. You will want a 99+.

the 99+ ford beefed up a little bit more to give it more power. it lacked compared to the tahoe. but it still allowed the same amount of mileage. what ever that means. these things dont the greatest anyways. but if you had a 00 stick with 99+ engine. the computer will recognize it easier too.

Took drivers side valve cover off to see if there was anything obvious wrong. The valve cover bolts came all the way out. According to the haynes manual they don't come out on 98 and up engines. leading me to believe it was a 97. So I started checking part numbers and sure enough '97.

If I was to get a computer from a 97 and use the 97 engine I have access to. (I can get it for $500 with 130,000) Will that work?

A local Junk yard is telling me I can use any year romeo engine as long as I use my intake, exhaust manifolds and oil pan. Not too excited about going that route.

I would swap the heads from your 00 over to the 97 if you are set on using it.
