I know this topic has been discussed before, but I'm looking for advice/help on this. My speedometer on my 99 expedition only acts up after driving for 20mins or so, then gets a mind of its own. I have replaced the vss with one from my local "box" parts store 3 times and still same result. Advice? Help... Been told cluster, but isn't the speedo just an output from the computer? Not feedback to computer? Why would this affect shifts and put it in limp mode. Just looking for some direction.

What are you calling a mind of it's own?

The speedometer should only be an output device from the pcm, although the cluster as a whole is somewhat "intelligent".

Shifts are being affected plus going into limp mode = additional problem(s)

How are the shifts changing?

What indication do you have for limp mode?

Thanks for responding, new to this and forgot to check back on it.

What I mean by mind of its own is that while steady driving at say 45mph, it will just start jumping around. Go up to 80, down to 20 etc... When it goes below the current speed, the trans will drop to the next gear as well.

Then the next stop and take off, it will hang in gear until around 3000rpm unless I let off the gas slightly to allow the shift. Park it for a while, and the problem goes away until I drive it for around 20-30mins again.

A friend of the family who is retired from Ford said the hanging in gear that I described is the limp mode. It was a new term to me.
