Ok , I have a 1999 Expedition XLT A4WD/4H/4L . After I got it I found the front drive shaft was gone . I got one and put it in , the 4WD did not work . I got a shift motor and the 4WD now works . My problem in 4H or 4L at low speed it is ok , you give it gas it crackles and pops . If you turn the wheels it crackles and pops , the more you turn the wheels the louder it crackles and the harder it pops .

what is the condition of the axle boots on both sides? check for evidence of slung grease on the area parallel to the boot clamps

sounds like the transfer case is done for

Ok I replaced the front diff and it still does it , does anybody's axles look like this or do they look right ?

The passenger-side with the wheel straight .

And the passenger-side with the wheels turn .
