Air intake question

Nothing major just a simple question. I was under the hood of my 5.4 Expy today and when I pulled the air intake I noticed it had a lot of extra chambers that went no where and were attached to nothing. So what do the extra chambers do? What purpose do they serve?

Noise cancelling/ muffling I believe.

Pull them off and plug the holes and you'll get alot more sound out of it and itll be the exact same as a 500 dollar cold air intake
