Last week, Expy didn’t restart from auto start stop. Transmission gear selector flashed. Dead in traffic. Was able to get it to restart. Since then I’ve made sure I’ve turned auto start/stop off and no issues. This morning no start. One running board was out, one was in. Only thing I’ve noticed is Sync screen has been staying “black” lite when truck is off. Are these related, seperate?

Last week had battery tested. Tested fine after auto start stop. It’s an AGM that’s only 1 year old.

It appears the running board was stuck trying to close and that’s what caused the battery to die?

Your one-year old battery should have a replacement warranty. I would replace it.

I'm not sure replacing the battery is the best place to start. Some places won't exchange a battery that tests good. Do you have the specs from the battery test? I would check the charging system next since the battery already tested good.

My 2023 Expedition battery had to be replaced under warranty at eighteen months. It never quit on me, but I started getting warnings on my app. The dealer confirmed it was going bad. I have never had a battery go bad anywhere near that soon.

Batteries that sit and end up low on charge can be damaged and have a very short life especially in extreme temperatures cold or hot or both.

Im not really sure why you responded to my post like this. Our Expedition gets driven every day and has done several long trips. And Ive lived in the same climate for 45 years.

Your not alone. I drive my expedition everyday.

I had a Motorcraft AGM battery installed backbin February 2023 and I just had it replaced while my vehicle was at the dealer for a separate issue. They told me that my battery is bad and replaced it for free since it was under the 3 year warranty. I had no clue though that it was bad though because it seemed fine and didnt have issues beforehand.. but anyways im glad they caught it early..?

Ive said this iin a different thread as well but Something is definitely going on with Motorcraft batteries. Not sure if its just the AGM batteries but Im seeing alot of issues recently with these. Even the dealer I was atbsaid alot of them are failing but didnt have any further info on that when I asked. They even replaced it with a different brand AGM. But that could have been because they were out of MC batteries? Haha i fifnt even know they replaced it with a different brand until after Ingot home and check under my hood. Went with a Napa AGM

Simple before you owned it it sat snd likely was dead. Its the number one reason most batteries are junk on recently bought cars.

again, do a charging system test. its tricky with smart charging, as the alternator is controlled by the PCM to only charge the battery 'just enough'. On my wife's Mercedes, there's a LINbus connector on the alternator, unplug that and the alteratnor reverts to 'dumb charging', running at 14.2V or so after a cold start and tapering down to 13.6V to maintain the battery. With the LIN bus connected, the Mercedes PCM turns the alternator down to 12.6V most of the time, as long as it thinks the battery is at least 70% charged. AFAIK, the Ford does much the same thing, except the LIN bus is on a connector with another signal which I think is required, so you can't just unplug it.

I have bought 80 new vehicles. Why is this the only one that suffered your theory? You assume a lot without asking questions.

I have a very early 2023 Expedition and the dealership just replaced my battery finding the battery sitting at 10.xx volts. The vehicle would start ok, took longer when really cold. What I noticed was the Configurable Gauges and My View would keep going back to the default. A good battery fully charged should sit around 13.2 volts. Dealership said the’ve been replacing a lot of batteries on warranty, so someone’s pushing some junk.

12v batteries that are healthy and charge typically have a resting voltage in the 12.8v neighborhood. Thats resting voltage not charging just turned off and voltage checked voltage

Hi everyone, quick update, so far no issues. Will continue to monitor. From what I can tell the running board didn't go back in, just one side. This caused the battery to drain. Since the battery was completely drained, everything seems reset and fine. Continuing to monitor and keep auto start/stop off. Thanks everyone!!

Basic lead acid battery behavior when left dead in hot or cold temperatures. Unless you know when that battery was manufactured and its full life story you only have basic science of how these batteries work ie discharge rate when not used. Whats your build date on your truck? When did you buy it? How many miles were on your truck when you got it?

My truck had a Early September build date and I got it first week of October with 10 miles in it. So if my battery was made july / august and shipped in my truck in September all mild weather months then its less likely to suffer discharge and temperature damage prior to me getting it.

If my truck sat on a lot for 3 months or longer like my Subaru had. Battery us likely discharged and temperature damaged and will fail shortly. And it did fail 4 months after I got the car. Standard warranty stuff 3yrs 30ish K miles is also statistics based most faulty parts tend to surface in the first 20-30k on new vehicles.

I bought it four weeks after the build date. Thirteen miles of which i put on about eight of those miles in a test drive.

And in most cases we don’t know when the battery was made. It could be sitting on a shelf for 6 months. Or have a cracked plate from being dropped before going into the truck. All typical things that cause battery failure

Another update for everyone. Battery died twice again. Even though the battery was only a year old, I went a head and replaced it. Unfortunately the battery was purchased before I got the Expedition, so I couldn't get it covered under warranty. I got it tested at parts store and tested "good" but I knew it wasn't. Took it to Interstate and they did a real test and load tested.

The voltage dropped from 12 to 11 then down to 7 volts. This indicated a bad cell.

This is the first step in the troubleshooting process. Hopefully it was just a bad battery, but it could be a parasitic draw. I will continue to monitor and update everyone.

Odyssey batteries have a sticker with a code telling when they were made. I think the last number is the last number of the year. So a 1 on the end of the little white sticker means it’s a 2021, a letter tells the month. Their website has info. Think that’s where I saw it.

Another reason why I recommended those batteries.

If I were here, you would know it !
Tested fine
Since you had a load test performed on it, did you also check cables & clamps for corrosion and/or tight fit ?

And yes, even 1 cell going bad can cause all of the symptoms you mention, as well as others...

If the above fails to fix the issues, then it's time to start checking wiring harnesses & fuses/relays....

Hidden gps trackers used by bad credit used car dealers can have high parasitic draw also
