My truck started to have a sudden loss of power on the way to work the other day, then again on the way home and followed by Check Engine light. My cam phasers were only showing slight ticking noises and still do. I took it in the shop today and during road test VCT solenoids read fine, but they said cam phasers are bad. They wanted $2100+ without even replacing chains, so I am looking into doing it myself or having it done elsewhere.

Do you think it's worth chancing just replacing phasers or doing a Livernois lockout kit with tuner or should I do factory replacement kit with phasers, chains, tensioners, guides,
and oil pump?

My other question would be is if I go with the Livernois kit and tensioner fail ,what happens?

I know ultimately it's always best to do it all , but just thought I would see what experience says.

Thanks

It all depends on the miles on your SUV. But remember when you or another mechanic tears into it, your opening a Pandora's box. Your definitely want to change chains, chain guides, use ford cam phasers, you get the point. Keep in mind that if your chain tensioners are worn or broken, you'll have to drop oil pan to clean out debris. Labor for front timing cover, and pan is 13 plus hours.$2100.00 sounds a bit high. Figure average labor is $100.00 to $130.00 hr. It's better to change worn parts now, rather than chance it putting back together with old parts.

1955moose thanks for the response , I can agree with you on doing it the right way the first time. I currently have 139,*** miles on it so it's probably just best that I do it all now and hope that it lasts another 100,000.

Oh yeah, it's a shame that Ford doesn't do like the old days, and test and test, before releasing an engine or parts. They use us as their testers. They never fess up to their mistakes, and make us pay. And we wonder why the Japanese car makers have such a big hunk of American money. Shop around if your having a shop doing the job. Be sure their well versed in this repair. Parts and labor should be $1500.00 to $1900.00, maybe a little higher depending on labor rate.
