Hi All,

I have a 2017 Expedition Limited 4X4 with a listed cargo carrying capacity on the door pillar of 1387 lbs.. The GVWR is 7500 lbs. and the Ford curb weight specification for this vehicle is 5789 lbs. This should give me a cargo carrying capacity of 1711 lbs. for a difference of 324 lbs.. Why isn't the cargo (including passengers) not 1711 lbs.? Am I missing something?

Thanks,
Dave

Are you sure your truck is 7,500 Gross? Mine is 7,700 GVWR and I would be surprised if it has changed any to the 17'. my curb is 5,805 but it's only a 20 pound difference they must have lightened them up a tad. Not sure why there is that gap in your cargo cap. Kind of stumped at that.

Edit: just checked and mine says max payload (cargo weight) is 1,895 pounds and the math:

7,700-5,805 LBS is 1,895 left over for cargo. the math works out on mine so I'm wondering why you have that gap? Anyone know?

According to the ford.com for the 2017 Limited Expedition

Base Curb Weight

4x2/4x4 Expedition (lbs.)

5562/5789

4x2/4x4 Expedition EL (lbs.)

5841/6091

The 5789 curb weight does not apply to every single Limited 4X4. Its a typical, general number.

There is a weight difference between 2nd row buckets and 2nd row bench, as well as between power and fixed running boards. Moonroof adds weight. Optional wheel and tires add (and even sometimes subtract) from your cargo capacity. Even something as insignificant as navigation or rear seat DVD adds/reduces ounces.

Toyota is the only mfg that I am aware of that posts a capacity reduced sticker on the door jamb. Many aftermarket upfitters (think commercial/fleet vehicles) are putting something similar there as well. Probably as the result of some lawsuit, or prevention of one...

Thanks all! My next step will be to get my vehicle weighed. I do have 2nd row bucket seats, power running boards, and a moon roof.

Another thought I had was tire load capacity. I have Hankook Dynapro AT-M 275/55R20's rated at 2535 lbs. at 51 psi. The vehicle recommended pressure is 35 psi, not sure of load capacity at this pressure.

That is some interesting info Flex....I didn't realize that anyone made the adjustments for options and posted the delta on an actual sticker on the vehicle!

Guess I can go home now...since I've learned my new thing for the day!

I weighed my Expedition after topping off with fuel and it read 6020 lbs. (after subtracting my weight). So 7500 GVWR - 6020 = 1480 lbs. Still about 100 lbs off the 1387 listed cargo capacity.

A gallon of Unleaded gasoline weights about 6 lbs. How does that effect your cargo weight? 28 X 6 = 168 lbs or 198 for a 33 gallon tank.

Fuel weight is included in the curb weight number. Curb weight is the vehicle as manufactured plus fluids. Does not include passengers or cargo. The delta between GVWR and Curb weight is available cargo and passenger weight.

For mine, starting with a manufacturer base curb weight of 6091 pounds and subtracting that from the door sticker GVWR weight of 7760 pounds, I have a cargo/passenger weight limit of 1669 pounds. This is modified by data I don't have, such as the weight of the HD towing package and other equipment not included in the base curb weight number.

Since you hit a scale to get real data, your cargo weight is 1480 pounds. It is what it is.
