Distance to empty keeps shrinking

D0C6C5D7-E594-482E-B894-8A518F5C6E57.jpegSince I’ve bought this in June of 20, the distance to empty keeps getting shorter. When I picked it up, and had to fill it up, it said 518mi to empty. Now it’s worse than ever.

Anyone have an idea why this is happening? Do I need to search out tier 1 gas or something?

The computer adjusts that number based on your average fuel consumption.

For example when I have driven in town for a month with very little freeway I can see as low as 340 to e. However on a long road trip thats all freeway (getting better gas mileage) the next fillup will reflect the better mileage and I will see 450+

I assuming you have a max edition that has the bigger gas tank than my standard length expedition. (Max holds 28 gallons, standard 23)

My '18 Max (56k) does the same thing. Not only does the DTE drop, but the average fuel mileage drops as well. I get 26-27 on highway trips, but it has dropped to 13-14 when I have a long spell of short trips with nasty traffic. I believe it is just simple math.

1. City vs highway (especially in regards to stop-and-go traffic)
2. Driving habits (gas mileage in these trucks is very sensitive to a heavy foot)
3. Winter-blend gas (started 9/15) provides worse fuel economy

You need to hand calculate because no way you are getting 26-27.

If you've had a trailer on the back it will mess with the DTE estimate. I always reset the fuel economy after towing

I don’t have a max. I have been fairly heavy with the lead foot. I’ll reset the fuel economy & take it easy and hopefully it’ll make a difference. Thanks all!

Well looks like you answered your question, heavy foot = heavy fuel consumption, lol.

Around here, the winter fuel blend gets worse mileage. I always lose several mpg once they start using the winter blend.

Short trips and stop and go around town kills mpg.

I didn’t know it assumed I’d drive a particular way before I even attempted to drive. I thought it would show the potential of the tank and adjust with the way I’d be driving during the life of the tank.

Like Doug stated, the dte goes off your trip avg mpg, but not the lifetime avg. Next time you ride, before filling up, change your myview page to the trip page (shows miles driven, mpg, time) and reset it and see how it does. For best mileage result, I would drive 65mph, and see how the mpg numbers look. If your dte is low, you should be able to drive about 3-4 min before it drops 1 mile. This will help give you a handle on if theres anything wrong with your trucks computers.

I started noticing the same thing. On long highway-only trips, when I would fill up the tank I would see 490+ miles of DTE. Now, I can see no more than 450 DTE, some times even 420 miles DTE. These are comparisons are under very similar conditions and same highway stretches.

A little off subject, but something that might be worth mentioning is the AC compressor. Even in Winter, the compressor will run by default, unless you manually turn it off. I get around 16.8 average mpg during most of the Summer. When it's cooler out, I completely turn off the AC compressor and my average gradually creeps up to 17.4 mpg. Just killing the AC compressor when it's not needed makes a difference. Back to the original question. The miles to empty is computed by calculating how much fuel is in the tank vs. what your "at the moment" fuel consumption is.

I just did a longer trip this weekend and when I filled up my DTE showed 540, previously it had been lower 400. So, spending some time cruising on the highway increased my mpg compared to normal driving and thus the DTE improved also. I think the display was showing 22.3 by the time we reached our destination.

The drive home required some 4a and setting the drive mode to snow, slower speeds on the snow packed roads and then a lot of head wind on the highway. Dropped the mpg down to 18ish on the drive home. Wind seemed to make the biggest difference in mpg in my opinion/observation.
