I purchased a used 1998 5.4 EB 4x4 last year. Tranny is starting to give me some issues. When trying to price replacements I keep getting difference answers as to which transmission mine has. Door code says 'E' and the owners manual says E4OD under fluid capacity. However ford dealership and other auto parts store bring it up and asked which transmission I have. I check and the identification sticker is long gone. From what I can tell the E40D is exactly the same as the 4R100.

completely confused at this point

Interesting question. I was informed the other day that the E40D is the same as the 4R100.
Yet when I look in the service manual for the 98 expy it had service procedures for
SECTION 307-01A: Automatic Transmission — 4R70W
SECTION 307-01B: Automatic Transmission — E4OD
SECTION 307-01C: Automatic Transmission — 4R100

It also has a procedure for the following
Transmission

ASSEM: Automatic Transmission — 4R100

ASSEM: Automatic Transmission — 4R70W

ASSEM: Automatic Transmission — E4OD

DISASSEM: Automatic Transmission — 4R100

DISASSEM: Automatic Transmission — 4R70W

DISASSEM: Automatic Transmission — E4OD

INST: Automatic Transmission — 4R100

INST: Automatic Transmission — 4R70W

INST: Automatic Transmission — E4OD

REM: Automatic Transmission — 4R100

REM: Automatic Transmission — 4R70W

REM: Automatic Transmission — E4OD

Go to ford etis and enter your vin number and you will see what all was on your expy when it was built

Sorry to add to your confusion

to further add to the confusion, not trying to steer anyone wrong but the E4OD and the 4r100 are the same transmission, the 4r100 is just newer, to steal from another post:

They are the same transmission, the E4OD was renamed to conform to ISO standards. The differences that you will see between the "named" transmissions are because 4R100's are newer and so have the newest design parts.

E4OD = Electronic 4 speed Over Drive (Ford's nomenclature)
4R100 = 4 speed Rear wheel drive 100 [relative torque rating] (ISO nomenclature)

so I would think if the 4R100 has the newest designed parts they would be somewhat different due to most likely different part numbers for the newest parts Good Old Ford

I have a 98 Navigator with a build date in 11/97 and it is the E40D. I'm guessing since the sticker is gone you don't know the month it was built? Maybe you could check carfax or autocheck to see when yours was first registered?

I'm pretty sure the E40D was early in the model year and the 4R100 was later. Maybe if enough people posted what they have and when thiers was built we could come up with a guess.

Door sticker is on the truck it's the ID sticker on the transmission that's gone. Build date of the expedition was 5/98 (happy 16th birthday!)

Door sticker tells you what transmission it left the factory with. Bet it's 4r100 with May build. Highly unlikely someone changed transmission model since. Would require electrical changes too. There is a letter code in the last row. My e4od is code E

Does anyone know the door code for the 4R100? when i look it up around the internet I only see 'E' shown.

E Automatic E4OD (F-150, F-250)

According to my reading they very close transmission but not all the parts are interchangeable.

Hate to necro an old post, but want to share what I was able to find for the next person who stumbles across this thread, and maybe get corrected if wrong.

My understanding and findings are that the E40D "E" trans code also applies to the 4R100 since they are the same general transmission, just slightly upgraded and renamed to comply with standards.
If you have a "U" code that should be the 4R70W, and should only be on the 4.6

To be sure what you have I would go by build year, or if in the transition year, date and other factors. If your vehicle was manufactured after the swap, an E trans code should still be a 4R100.

Basically, don't be thrown off because your code is "E" and not something else if you should have a 4R100
