Im looking to buy my 1st Expy. Im looking for a 1999-2000 in decent condition for around 4500 to 5000. All the trucks I am coming across have really high mileage, around the 120-140,000 range. Should I be worried about such high mileage?? This may be a stupid question but how many miles can these trucks go up to without the engine going bad.

I remember back in the day, when a car/truck with over 100,000 was a bad thing. Nowadays this is all Im seeing....

Please let me know what the deal is! I was soooo close to buying a 2000 red Expy for 5700 but didnt because I was scared of the 110,000 miles on it. It was otherwise minty!

My '99 with 5.4 just turned 150k yesterday.......runs & drives like new.
A friend of mine has a '99 f150 5.4 with 230k on it and he regularly tows a 6,000 lb. trailer.
It all depends on how well the The car was maintained.

Well I got a '97 5.4L EB with just over 160k and have had no engine problems other than alternator and coils and I think an injector. The only major problems I've had is with the transmission but the problems were years apart so you shouldn't worry.

It all depends on how the truck has been maintained. If it has been well maintained then it should have no problem lasting over 200,000 miles. I have an 03 with the 5.4 and I expect it to last until about 250,000 miles, so far I'm at 120,000 without replacing anything but what's recommended in the scheduled maintenance.

my 97 has 205k miles and runs great... a few weeks back i thought I blew the motor(saw oil spraying down the highway and no oil pressure) I drove it 3 miles at 75mph got off highway and found my oil to be down 6qts and my amsoil filter had failed(o-ring fail) anyways it had just started to tick when I pulled in to the auto parts store...

I was runing amsoil/amsoilfilter/and lucas oil treatment... I will forever run lucas as the truck now has 1500miles on it since this and still runs great!!!
I kept driving because I have access to another motor for $300... and need to fix a cracked header... (it has inferno putty on it now and has had it on it for 7k miles with no issues).
this is my winter beater but I love it. I think its going to last till 300k or more (it runs like it has 50k on it)

Got 170k on my 97 4.6l. I've had problems with 4WD not engaging and some other small issues. Engine and transmission are fantastic. It's a tough vehicle and I absolutely love it. It doesn't hurt that there were thousands produced and sold. The used parts market is plentiful.

Just my 2 cents worth.

good to know... thanks for the info everybody!

My 2000 I bought at an auction for 2k 2 months ago. Had 164k on it, shifts and runs great.

Before I found this one I found a 2004 explorer with 110k and it ran like crap. All depends on the past owners and how well like everyones been saying it's been taken care of.

Good luck!

I just bought a 01 4x4 XLT (5.4L) with 150k, for $4,500. Another $300 in parts and labor for a full tuneup, getting nearly 20mph on highway with easy acceleration. Runs like new.... My dad's abused and neglected 97 F-150 5.4L has 240k...and he doesn't take care of it at all!!!!

I have a 99 5.4L XLT with 169k on it. Runs awesome. I've only had to have the alternator replaced and the AC compressor fixed. Still runs like a champ.

254,000+ miles here. Slight rattle at startup if it sits outside overnight, otherwise sounds and runs like a brand new truck.

Running Royal Purple 5w-30 and Purolator Pure One filters.

Our EXPY has 284,000 on her. Shes starting to show her age...

She only has to drive me 2 miles to work a day so she should last a while longer.

fixed/replaced this year:
replaced battery
replaced alternator
replaced radiator
#3 coil
full tune-up
some other stuff I can't remember off the top of my head.

I find this hard to believe...

Well he said nearly 20mpg which could mean more around 19mpg, which is possible with a few mods and if you use very light acceleration. My 5.4L has gotten 18mpg, but due to my driving habits it's usually around 16. If getting 20mpg is someones target mpg for the expedition, it's not unrealistic to achieve it.
