Front End Rattle

I have a 2012 EL 4x4 with 64K miles and the front developed a rattle in it
today. It sounds like metal on metal, and if i select 4A from 2wd the noise
goes away. As soon as I put it back in 2wd the noise comes back. Is this
possibly a front hub issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It could be any number of things. Calipers, brake pads, suspension parts, ball joints, etc etc. Need to get it up in the air and take a look for anything apparent first. Also search YouTube for possible common rattles.

metal on metal.....hmmm, I can give you the 2 items i found that caused a similar sound.
1. Front wheel hubs. Generally, they make more of a growling sound but if they get bad enough I suspect the sound could be a grinding sound metal on metal. Don't buy cheap hubs. It's tempting to buy the lower grad ones at the Local Autozone. I really like the Timken brand. Seem to get the most miles out of them.
2. Here is one that is not checked often.....I found both bolts on the upper control arm to be loose. Yes, I said loose. As the arm actuated down quickly, the sound was apparent. It was a metal on metal sound. Turns out the actual alignment of the upper control arm was off due to the loose bolt and caused the arm at full extension to hit the side of the pocket it sits in.

Try looking at those items, but I'm betting on the wheel hubs.
