Introducing myself. Just got a new-to-me 07 Expedition XLT. It was a prior rental from Enterprise (came with the Enterprise key tag). I bought and installed a VR3 wireless backup camera and will add the following soon: Wolo backup horn & Parrot ck3000 Bluetooth speakerphone. So far so good. I've taken the "extended" family out a few times and I'm quite impressed with the handling of this vehicle. This is the first Ford truck I've ever owned and I gotta say that they are great.

Welcome tk.

I was going to install a backup camera myself so I wonder:

1- did you have to remove the lift-gate interior to install the power wire from the camera at the license plate area? How complicated was it?

2- was there a reverse light wire in there? or how did you power the camera?

Thanks for any feedback.

Camera Install

Mark,

Yes, I did have to take off the plastic liftgate cover. There are 2 torx (T-25) screws at the pull-down handle, a whole bunch of spring clips and 2 plastic expanding trim anchors (visible when you open up the window of the liftgate).

Once you have access to the back of the lift gate, I went ahead and mounted the camera on the lower 2 license plate screws. I dremeled out one a groove on the left bottom license plate screw anchor and routed the wiring through this to the inside of the liftgate (didn't need to drill).

The wiring was then routed around the window to the rubber boot. Had to use a long zip tie as "fishtape" to get the wiring through the boot and into the Expy's interior cabin.

Once there, I had to add an additional 4 ft of wiring or so (used exterior speaker wire actually (with plastic shielding), and routed that back to the outside through the reverse/left-brake light rubber boot (can be seen with the interior panels removed and the left backup/brake light removed - removing the light requires a T-20 torx bit). Once again, I used a long zip tie as "fishtape".

Now that the wire is back outside, I spliced it into the left side reverse light wire before it connects to the left reverse light bulb. I also took the liberty to add some additional wiring here (paralleled another set of wiring down to the backside of the bumper for the Wolo backup horn install).

The interior was actually more of a headache for me, as I am used to wiring *** cars that pretty much make it standard that when I remove the key from the ignition, the cigarette lighter turns off. I hardwired the monitor to the cig lighter on the front instrument radio panel and the monitor stayed on forever. Looked all over for an accessory/ignition power source and found none (not even on the radio harness... I couldn't believe it). Anyways, ended up tapping into a fuse all the way on the far right passenger kick panel. Since I have an early 07, I secured the monitor via self adhesive velcro to the empty button trim where most 07's have the console control at (also where I drilled the hole for the wire to come out for the monitor).

Hope this helps.

TK - wow thanks! I have worked on cars all my life and can picture everything you are talking about.

I see it is alot of work. As for the interior panels, I assume you have roof, post and side panels that have to be removed.

I had a fleeting thought the other day of mounting the camera right over the trailer hitch receiver. This way I could pickup the blue brake wire that is pre-run from the hitch right into the drivers dash area. I was thinking of using a toggle switch to power both the monitor and camera. Now that you have one installed do you think that having it installed that low would minimize its effectiveness?

Thanks for all your input.

"Copy that" on the panels. Basically anything you think needs to be removed will be for that kind of install. The camera has an 80 degree vertical and 110 horizontal, so no, I don't think installing it lower would be an issue (unless you like looking at sky and the road in a rear view). In fact, if you have the HD towing package, installing it using the wiring of the hitch is ideal (why open up panels, etc if you don't have to, right?). But, when I had just a bike rack installed (haven't towed my box trailer yet), even with the camera mounted at the license plate, I get significant blockage from having bikes on it. The only issue I see of installing the camera that low would be line of sight blockage when you are towing, or even have your ball mount attached. With the VR3 camera it is quite easy to check. Connect 12v to the camera, then another 12v to the monitor (from the back of the Expy would be ideal), then move the camera around and vary the hitch attachments and see where you want it mounted. Good luck.
