I was curious about others here that have had to take in their expedition to replace cam phaser. How long did it take? Did dealer give you a hard time about replacing it even though it hasn't completely failed yet? Anything else I need to know when I take it in?

Thanks in advance!

My dealer said to drop off sunday night. Leave a note on the steering wheel stating not to start without 2 people, one to start the truck and one who will be assigned to the job of replacing the phasers to listen to the cold start.

After that, if parts in stock, 2 days

I picked mine up a week ago. It tool the dealer 3 weeks to get the parts due to a nationwide back order. I shared this video with the dealer in hopes they could diagnose and order the parts prior to me dropping off. 26K miles on early 2018 build.

Had mine done in February. It was at the dealer for 3 weeks, but I also had other minor issues and a trim piece they had to order.

No issues With dealer and immediately gave me a loaner. I have about 6k since the repair and knock on wood still silent starts.

Thanks for the video! I guess it's me, but I don't really hear anything. At least outside of "normal". Makes me wonder about mine? Is there a recall or TSB for this? Certain production dates?

Wait...I listened again. Is it that slight rattle for a second at first start?

Yes, the first 3-5 seconds. I only noticed it if my truck sits for an extended period of time.

Sorry to hear it!
I'd do what I could to get them to commit to a loaner before dropping it off. Some dealers are better than others with that.

Mine just started making the noise. Based on the info I got from a Ford Tech he said there is absolutely no damage that will happen to the engine as a result of the noise. I am questioning whether I want to get it fixed or not? Do I really want the thing torn apart to fix something that isn't that big of a deal. The little plastic thing in there is only there to prevent rattle on cold start he said.

Looks like the tech in this video said the same thing the tech said that I talked to. Just makes a noise and doesn't hurt anything.
In that case, Ford is dumping a ton of money into an issue that doesn't cause any problems... Sucks either way.

If it was before the updated parts were released I would completely understand not wanting to tear your engine apart. Now that there are updated parts I'd want it fixed. How many engines do you think they have torn apart that they are sure have had the issue for an extended period? Broken plastic inside an engine is not something I'd bet money on... But I'm also basing this on no real knowledge.

What months/years does this affect? I haven’t paid too much attention but I will if it’s something I need to listen for.

What I have heard is that it has affected every ecoboost 3.5L that has been around. The older models also had it from what I have been told.

Has anyone seen the updated parts? It sounds like this has been a long term issue for Ford. Is that piece still just plastic and its just gonna happen again but take longer to happen? (ie once the warranty is up?)

No cam phaser problems YET in my 2018 XLT but I don’t even have 19k on it yet. Warranty runs out in March 2021. Anyone know if there is a class action lawsuit regarding this issue to extend warranty repairs?

From what I hear, there is no damage that can occur as a result of this and it is only a brief noise until oil pressure locks it in place. It would be tough to sue someone for damages when there is technically nothing wrong with it, just a brief rattle noise. The part that is going bad is only there to prevent the rattle noise until oil pressure builds.

My 2019, with 12k had them replaced,
The tech that did the job is a pro at them by now.

He did a flawless job b/c he does so many of the.

I would take in the truck and have them replaced.

I believe the updated parts became available Aug-Sept '19 for the production line and Oct to dealers... So everything but 2020 models will have the old parts.
