It sounds similar to what I thought was waste gate, but when did the spring-tensioner "fix" on them it did not change that sound. As @SyndicateZ said, best thing to do is set phone to record, set on ground behind front wheel, and then crank it. You can also get a length of rubber hose and use it as a "stethoscope" to try and isolate the noise.

Sounds like cam phasers. The wastegates sound like a heavy exhaust shield kind of noise.

I had the cam phasers replaced at 80K miles it is now at 122K. The cam phaser rattle only lasted a few seconds, this will last up to a minute. It goes away quickly if I start and drive immediately.

Do you have the part numbers for what phasers were installed? Many got the old style re installed.

I don't know where to start looking for that information now. At the time, I checked, and it was the last redesign that was commonly accepted as a fix. I had to wait for months for the parts to come in from Ford. They were not sitting on the dealer's stockpile.

Do you have a copy of the dealer repair order? The part numbers will be listed there to see.

The repair invoice has part numbers for everything but the phasers. For the phasers it just lists "KITPHASERSF150" as the part number.

From that 2 sec. clip, it sounded exactly like (used to be ours) 2020 Expedition. For my case, the one time I caught it happening was actually when it was semi-warm, idling after a short drive (10 mins). I think I posted a thread with a clip of it too, will have to find it.

I have a similar sound. It does not come from the engine bay, but more under the car - sounds like an heat shield knocking - and can go on for a minute or less. Only when starting from cold, and at low idle. In this colder weather, typically will not hear it, as the engine starts at a high idle and maintains that to warm the vehicle. Once the vehicle is warm, it is not present.

I’ve tried adding springs to the turbos but it hasn’t changed anything (they may not be effective or incorrectly added). I do have the ‘long horse hair’ coming out of the tailpipe; don’t know if there’s a connection.

Wow, that’s crazy, almost sounds like a made up dealer entry to cover the part. The updated phasers start with a Ford ML number. Unfortunately, you might have anything in there. I think to be 100% - take it to a shop to get diagnosed. Up top and front noise on start up is the phasers. Wastegate noise is more in the wheel wells.

It might be a part number in their service order system that relates to a kit of parts (phasers, gaskets, seals, etc.).
