Ive been searching the web to see if anyone else has had this problem. My truck will not start. all i get is click coming from the firewall right behind the two high amp fuses beside the battery. also the doors will lock and unlock when i release the key. this happened all of a sudden ive had no previous problems with the car other than routine maintenance. does anyone have any input into what my problem may be? any help will be greatly appreciated.

Check your battery. Have you tried jumping it? The click is the starter selonoid clicking. My guess is the battery is low on juice and needs a charge or replacement. You can take it out and go to Autozone, Advance Auto, or the like, and they will test it for free.

agreed on the battery. pull it and have it checked, its free. if its more than 5 years old its probably time for a new one anyway.

I would check the battery first, then check the battery cable at the starter. If the cables are good try giving the starter a few taps with a hammer.

I checked the battery and cleaned the terminals and i beat on the starter. no dice. and as i stated earlier the clicking is coming from the firewall not the starter. also ive had a battery die before in this car i never got any of these symptoms. ive never seen the doors lock and unlock after trying to crank. its a 97 model by the way

I wonder if the aperture is stuck on the flywheel and the solenoid is just clicking? I had that happen to my Ford Escort once and beat the crap out of it and still didn't turn over, then I took it to a shop and they said it the aperture was stuck on the flywheel and they have never seen anything like that before.

The clicking could be the battery saver relay? I think that's what it's called. I've heard of it clicking when there is low voltage. I know the 150's do some weird stuff when they have a low/dying battery.

Have someone jump you/give you some extra juice while you crank it up. If it starts up faster/better, it's probably the battery.

I had the same problem with my 97 xlt. When I would try to start it I could here the solenoid ?? on the firewall clicking when I would try to turn it over. I too tried jumping it, cleaning connections, checking fuses, ETC. What finally got mine running was using a pair of pliers I had to tap on the starter/solenoid while I had a friend try and start it. My .02 would be the starter / solenoid. Good luck.

By the way it was a PITA to get to the bolts of the starter.
