Hello there i'm Val and we just purchased a 2008 Expedition EL King Ranch 4x4 with "some" miles on it (130K). It drove fine from what I could tell and purchased it as it was a great price. The truck has every option with the exception 20in wheels and power fold mirrors.

Since buying it this last Saturday, we have had the chance to put about 300 miles on it and have made some observations. Chime in if you have experience with these.

1. While driving on a long streach of road where the only hills are the overpasses/bridges, the transmission would occasionally drop a gear in cruise control. I know must cars do this to maintain speed on an incline but when not in cruise control I would not feel this shift pattern.

2.While driving in cruise control on a down hill, I would feel what i would call a very very slight jerk. Almost as if the engine/trans rengaged forward. This observation is like a duh of course it does that but since i'm new the this Expedition I just want to make sure others experience this too. (spark plugs/cops???)

3. From about 5/10mph to about 45/50mph I can feel and hear what I can only describe as a hum. I feel it in the steering wheel if you will and can hear it louder as the speed increases. I believe it to be iether the wheel bearings/hubs, the bearing in the drive shaft or the tires.

4. When starting the engine and selecting Drive, there is a very strange feeling in acceleration for the first second or two. After that, all is gravy.

5. I have Air-ride in the rear and so far it appears to be working. How often does the pump turn on to maintain level ride under a normal load?

6. On occasion, the navigation display will show an error regarding the disc is unreadable. Showing something to the effect that the disk needs to be cleaned of smudges/fingerprints. Ive tried to eject the DVD from the lower bay but it does not want to come out. It will make the noise like it wants to but only the slightest edge of the disk comes out. If I use a needle nose plier I am sure I can pull it out but I have yet to try. I push the disk back in and the only way to reset the system that I have found is to turn off truck and restart it. That causes display to close and load back up like normal. BTW, Per the display I have navigation dvd 7P.

7. Only 1 wireless headset came with the truck. I have seen some of these wireless headsets on amazon for 15-20$ each. Is there a particular type of headset that I should buy?

8. According to carfax and accucheck? there are no service records for this truck. I am going to assume that none of the fluids have been changed so I will be doing that in the next few weeks. Is it possible that truck was serviced at the dealer but not reported to these agencies? I should go get my vin checked at the dealer.

9.According to the original window stick my truck was equipped with the HD towing package. To the left of the hitch I see a 4 pin connector and to the right I see a flip up connection with a 7 point connection. Upfront though is a different story as what I belive to be the Trans cooler is not the HD one. I see a small wide cooler that is 5 rows high and the HD cooler should be 7 rows high. This brought something else to my attention. 2 of the plastic brackets below/around the cooler appear to have been broken previusly which leads me to believe that this truck could have been involved in a front end collision at some point in its life that was not reported to carfax. Standard cooler thrown in instead of the HD one it had. Would it be hard to upgrade the cooler to a bigger one?

10. Spark Plugs........ Well I read through page 30 on this 3rd gen section and I seen a little bit of it all. I am not sure if the plugs have ever been changed. I saw the video on one of the treads and this is my plan of action. 1 can of seafoam per tank the next 3 weeks. A little bit of PB blaster where the plugs are to work the top for the next few weeks. When starting change, warm engine up to operating temp and use a cordles impact. Have special removal tool ready just incase.

Even with all this I love this truck and I am going to make the best of it.

Thanks for your time!

How can I forget! The windows are not exactly in a hurry to get up. The back 2 are fine, the passenger side is slowish but the drivers side takes the cake. I read about using lubricant on the side channels can improve speed?

Will make one comment.
When you are in Cruise Control what you experience is that the electronics of the expy are what controls the shift points so you will feel it shift when required But when you are out of Cruise Control you are in control You don't respond to the different sensors as quickly as the computer does. The computer tries to maintain the speed that you have selected and when the load on the engine changes it therefore will make changes which may result in the shifting you are experience.

You may want to do a search on How Cruise Control Works and that may give you a better understanding of the difference in you being in control and the Cruise Control system being in control

Absolutely! I used motorkote spray. I cleaned the track the best i could then lubricated the tracks. Now the windows roll up and down rather well. I guess you could say fast- ish.

I used to have a 2005 f150 KingRanch and every so oftem I would perform some "TLC" on the chairs/leather with the KingRanch conditioner. The seats on this thruck seem slightly different/less maintanence than my past truck. Is the same KR conditioner still needed for these seats?

Also, I stopped by the local ford dealer to see what certain services would cost.

Transmission fluid change: 199$
Standard oil change 40$
Spark Plug change 750$ (regardless if they break or not)
Front wheel hub replace 4wd 600$ (per side)

Just found out my expedition has a build date of 5/29/2008.

By that point in time had Ford installed the redesigned spark plugs?

The only warrenty work according to ford coustomer service was several years ago when the previous owner reported hard downshift while decelerating. Dealer flashed trans/pcm???? No other warrenty work reported.

Go to Ford ETIS and enter your vin number It will tell you what all was in the expy when built

I printed the window sticker copy from that page and I see all the items that came on my expy. I am more inclined to belive that my expy was involved in a front end collision at one point in time (minor??). The list indicated per the VIN that my expy included the HD towing package. Up front I only have a 5 channel cooler instead of the HD 7 channel. Some of the plastic support had cracks and bend marks as if something had been pushed into the radiator area. It was probably damaged and replaced by a standard sized cooler.

I can buy the 7 channel cooler cheap on Rockauto. Is there a better one out there or is there such a thing as a bigger cooler than the 7 channel one that would help towing 5-6K load?

Thanks

considering the heat that you have in your area I would upgrade to the larger cooler. As to if there are any larger you may want to check on some of the RV/Towing web sites. Or find a good RV dealer in your area to see what is available Can also check on e-bay

Ok, that will put me on the right path towards a trans cooler....

So after reading a little more it appears I cannot do the 3/2 lift on my expy due to my air ride on the rears. I could do it if I swapped to springs but I like the ride. Bummer.

Jdm - Have you changed the trans fluid? How many miles are on it? My Expy would downshift hard once in a while until the fluid change. Now all is well. It was due for the change at the time.

One thing I noticed on my 07 EB EL is that the 1-2 shift can get a little wonky at stop signs. If you you do a slow "rolling stop" it gets confused and slams into first when you go. I guess the best is to "obey all traffic rules" and come to a complete stop or have a faster rolling stop! :D

I have not been using cruise control this past week and all is good.

Due to my current work regimine I will have to wait about 2 weeks to perform my inital fluid exchanges. For starters I will replace the trans fluid & transfer case fluid. Regarding Motor oil, I am not sure if the oil it currently has is standard/blend or synthetic. I would like to go full synthetic though. I'm still trying to research that 3/2 lift or alternative with air ride but keep coming up with dead ends. The truck drives like a dream and I cant wait to drive cross country.

Also, Which front hubs would you recomend as replacements for my current ones from rockauto? I see many at different price points and I want to make sure I get the right ones.

Thanks.
