I went to the NMRA nationals Saturday (3 day event) and decided a couple days before I would enter the "true street class".
For those that don't know this is a class where all vehicles must be registered, licensed, tagged etc... They must complete a 30 mile cruise just before they make 3 back to back passes with no tuning, adjustments or cooling allowed. Opening the hood is prohibited!! This helps eliminate "race cars" and is supposed to be more representative of what you would run on the street.
Knowing the rules I "detuned" my expy before racing for safety, primarily pulled timing. Did not want to risk detonation if she became heat soaked.
RACE -
It was very cool being in a long convoy of other ford racers, primarily stangs, on the street. During the cruise I could hear the loud whine of what I assumed was a procharged mustang behind me. I later found it was 2 cars behind me...lol. It was very loud.
Well, the expy was much "softer" off the line due to the lower timing but felt better once she was moving. It also shifted closer to 5,000 rpm vs 5,400 that it generally shifts. My guess is it shifted quicker due to being "detuned". (less torque). Live and learn..
Overall I was happy. It drove/raced smoothly with no issues and was consistent. I also finished near the middle of the pack (car#125) which I am happy with since most of the cars were mustangs vs a 3 ton expy.
