I honestly don't know if there is a custom tune on it but I am pretty sure she is as stock as can be.

Thanks for the tips on the tranny hose and air filter cleaning

Will post any news shortly

i have the same thing going on with a 2005 5.4
for my misfire on cylinder 3 the coil and spark plug was changed twice and i still get the misfire so it cant be the coil or plug ?

I would think another sensor that tells the pcm what is plug is firing is the culprit, or your connector or wiring to the CoP is the issue, a clogged cat can make your truck run sluggish and have alot less power, if I were to replace my Cat, I would go with two Hi-Flow cats from Magnaflow or something like that, they are cheaper than OEM, and flow better, may want to check your O2s, and clean your MAF sensor as well, MAF sensor first btw, the cleaner is around 6 or 7 bucks a can.

If you are getting a misfire on only one cylinder and the coil and plug have already been changed, The next place I would look would be The FUEL INJECTOR or a BURNT VALVE. Also check the connector going to the coil it may be bad.

If it was a Cat that was plugged you would more than likly(sp) have more cylinders on that bank missfiring or a code from the o2 censor saying that the cat is under threshold.

i also get the code for p0420 ok will see how it goes

For the P0420 that would mean it is the cat or cats on the drivers side that are giving problems. But could also be a failing o2 sensor, I would change the o2 sensors first unless you can get under the truck after driving for about 20-30 min and see if there is a significant temp difference between the drivers side and passanger side bank of cats. If a cat is plugging up it will be hotter ( I have seen them glowing cherry red before) a hand held laser temp reader works well for this.

Now what???

So after searching and playing around with flammable products and a hot engine I have found NO vacuum leaks.
I did however find a cracked hose near the rear main seal. Clipped the end off and fit it back on (changed nothing)
Cleaned MAF and Air filter
Still getting a blinking CEL so I am misfiring (P0300 multiple cylinders)

Think I might have to bring this one in...

Is there an easy way to to test my cat?

Not sure of any easy ways to test cats except for a large temp differnece between the same set of cats (front or rear) left vs right.

You stated that there WAS a tune up done before you bought the Expy, but what all was replaced?

Just plugs or plugs and coils?

Where the o2 sensors replaced?

If it was only the plugs that where replaced then I would go ahead and change the plugs again using motocraft platinum plugs and new coils ( could be as easy as the plugs where not changed with the correct ones).

If the o2 sensors have not been replaced then I would definatley have those changed out since they send alot of info to the computer for fuel and timing curve adjustments.

Bad news!!!!!!!

Well I gave up on trying to chase this problem brought it to a friends mechanic...
Drive side cat plugged, passenger side cat severely restricted and very concerned about condition of the engine combustion due to the back pressure.

Options- Drop the cats to see if that helps the power issue.
replace cats and hope for the best on the engine

Going to talk to the place I got the truck from to see what they are willing to do. fingers crossed but not sure they are going to do a damn thing

Is it the front or rear cats that are plugged?

If it is only the rear cats you can cut them out and put in straight pipe with no check engine light. Plus you gain a good amount of high rpm power but loose just a little off the line.

I just did this about a month ago and it made freeway driving alot better plus when going up hills it will stay in overdrive longer and some times will pull a hill without shifting out of overdrive where before it would drop a gear about half way up the same hill.

**EDIT - NEVER MIND JUST REALIZED YOU ARE IN CALIFORNIA - DAM EMISSIONS**

if the engine was so far out of tune then the cats could of been plugged from that. if you replace the cats then all could be solved

9 days and counting

Ok gentlemen a long awaited update...
I talked to the dealer that sold me the truck and they agreed to have a 3rd party (Folsom Lake Ford Dealership) diagnose and fix the truck. Well that was 9 days ago, 3 or 4 solutions (I've lost count) most were ones that you guys recommended and still no truck in my driveway. The slowest Ford dealership in the world has boiled it down to a timing issue and began working on that today but then didn't have the parts to finalize the job so into tomorrow we go to hopefully have my truck put back together and running correctly. Anybody else w/ experience like this?

One question I do have is What is a leak down test and what does it tell me?

Holding my breath until tomorrow I will let you know!!!

tells you what the compression is in each cylinder, if they are all even and have 140 to 150 compression that holds for a certain time frame, it means that your rings are good, no blown head gasket or no bad or leaking valves.

No cats available

So there are no aftermarket cats that are 50 state compliant so stuck with Ford OEM at the tune of $1500 per side.
Good news is that the place I purchased the truck from is fixing for me. So Hopefully should have it back in the next day or two... Hopefully!

After 3 weeks

All is better!!! Two new cats at no cost to me and the truck is running great!!!
Thanks to all for your help and suggestions.
I will be doing the Gotts Mods soon and hopefully that will add a little mpgs and hp.
After that I think its an exhaust then maybe rims.

A bad TPS sensor can give you a bad day, but it could even be a vauum line or the elbow at the back of the intake. Get the codes first tho, it will save you money.
