Day 1 under the hood for the first time.. ( 2 days ago )
So with all new toys one has to become 1 with the vehicle by fussing with it.
And let's be real here.. it came from a ****** used car lot… But that's ok based on all the other BEATERS I saw on craig's list ( not to mention the ODD people on the phone ) this was the " pick of the litter of mutts ".

I put about 40 miles on it,, and aside from a REALY LOW rear tire ( with the dry wall screw option ) bad handling issues. Into the gas station to tank it up I went.

I noticed that the gas cap felt LOOSE and I didn't get a **** when I undid the cap.. like it does on my other cars… But I needed to get home and didn't ponder about it... 96 bucks.. (thank you very much, what no free soda ? ) and that imported gas station air of EAU de stink.. 38 psi and back on the road home.

Stopped at Auto zoned out and got wiper blades ( since it's raining in California… OH MY GOD….. WEATHER…... RUN FOR YOUR LIFE ) and a new gas cap which felt MUCH better as far as the seal goes.. When I popped the old one off…... odd still no ****..

On my maiden voyage, the whole time I drove it truck ran " cold ish" on the gauge.. never got over 1/4 but I was to busy testing the cruise control,, that works..playing with the " MAX SOUND " system.. that SUCKS…and finding the " perfect placement " for the Captain's chair. You know important stuff..

The truck started normally, ran fine, had GREAT power, no codes. and I was quite pleased with my new toy… BUT.. under the hood was FILTHY.. so we start with the simple stuff.. clean the battery terminals ( but couldn't disconnect due to I need to finish the " learning cycle " for EVAP.. so I could smog the truck.

Use brass brush, spray, clean, apply grease.. DOH no battery hold down.. fine moving on.. ( order part on E bay 5 bucks ).

Evap line from throttle body to valve disintegrating .. replace with 3/8 fuel injection line for temp fix… and closely inspect the " new heads ".. well I can see new gaskets.. Clean, wipe, look, spray, wipe… 30 minutes and the truck is now " cool" to the touch.

So now it's on to fluids… Hmmm new radiator, new UPPER hose, new water pump.. OK… open up the coolant tank BROWN… Hmmm a light tea like brown.. not 4 year old brake fluid brown… and it's a bit low.. so added coolant to the low mark & fired her up…

So here come the questions:
1) Should water be flowing constantly in the overflow if the truck is COLD ?
2) What is "NORMAL" on the temp gauge.. 1/2 way when up to temp ( like it is on my 91 Exploder ) ?

Friday morning I took the truck to my FAV Tire store, which is about 5 miles away.. the truck NEVER got into the " normal " temp zone.. and that was about the air temp out of the heater… MAX TEPID

I got " the deal" on 4 new tires , alignment and had em inspect the brakes..
Front pads were at 1mm away from the warning shims (****** used car salesman, typical ) the rears were at 85%.. So new front brakes added to the bar bill.
I'm having the Stat changed to a 195 ( and I'll bet it's either stuck OPEN or NO stat in there ) and a coolant flush…
Because the car needs to be up to temp to have a HOPE to pass smog !

So the NEXT exciting episode of Mike's new ride will be Can U pass CA SMOG?

the fact that you had a low temp reading on the gauge and the water flowing in the overflow tank leads me to assume the t/stat has been removed.

Normal reading would be half way up the gauge

You stated earlier that you had a Actron reader Hook it up and see what your coolant temp is I would say you should see 190 to 205 after running for about 20 minutes at road speed

If you need a stat install a Motorcraft stat

SMOG PASS!
PAPERWORK DONE !
New meat all the way round !
New front brakes !
Alignment !
( and all front suspension AOK, looks like it was done 30K ish ago )
Raid flushed, NEW coolant in
DRIVING SWEET!
on the way home it tosses an error code P-0174
"oxygen sensor in bank 2 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 2 is generally the side of the engine that doesn't have cylinder #1."

So looks I have a bit O checking to do for :
"In the vast majority of cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick. Consult your service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace if necessary Check for a dirty fuel filter and proper fuel pressure"

AND

The scanner sez ~ 198 coolant temp
I ASSUME that should be ~ 1/2 on the gauge..
The gauge NEVER gets over 1/3rd..
Since the heads were " re done " the sender is pooched..

PLUS
still tepid air out if the heater…

OOH OHHHH Just decoded the vin and it's not a 4.6 it's a 5.4 TRITON Bigger is better … right?

Hope the shop manual comes SOON!

Calling it a day…today

So I've been surfing thru the shop manual… trying to get the free of how info is laid out…It's a bit confusing right now. So here are 2 more questions..
1) To PROVE the engine is a 5.7 I need to look at the sticker on the D/S rocker arm cover?
Is there a VIN number on the block that is viewable? What are the other " tells " on this motor…. PVC is on pass side the EGR copper tube is HUGH

2) Where is the water temp sender for the gauge? The 2 pin CHTS is on the head ( under the intake ) but where is the other one?? Is it a single pin sender??

Thanks
Mike

On the 99 expeditions the 5.4 has Coil on plugs whereas the 4.6 has TWO ignition modules located in the front of the engine one on each side

In the 2000 model year Ford changed to COP's on both the 4.6 and 5.4

ADDED the 5.4 has always had COP's in the 1st Gen's

As long as you have the original engine then yours would be a 5.4

Verifying terminology here, there is 1 coolant temp senders:
The one for the temp gauge ( ECT ) located on top of the aluminum intake roughly between 3 & 5 ?

the other temp sender for the ECU ( CHT ) measures the head ( METAL ) temp and no water jacket involved.
Located under the intake with a pigtail before it get to the main engine harness.

Both are 2 pin connectors… correct?

further info: ( from the " WEB" so needs verification )
Temperature Gauge

The PCM receives the engine coolant temperature status through hardwired circuitry to the cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor. The instrument cluster receives the engine coolant temperature data from the PCM over the communication network. The instrument cluster monitors the engine coolant temperature data received from the PCM and provides the temperature gauge indication with a corresponding movement of the pointer. If the instrument cluster receives no signal the temperature gauge defaults to the COLD position.

Which means the cluster is KAPUT ?

On the DVD go to the PC/ED and open it then go too Section 1 and scroll down to PCM Inputs and look for the Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor and Engine Coolant Temperature

In 2000? My '99 5.4 had COPs....ended up replacing them all by the time I sold it with about 160K on her.

agree it was in 99 that the 4.6 didn't have COP's but the 2000 model year was when Ford put COP's on the 4.6 The 5.4 has always had COP's for the First Gen's
