Protecting your rear end

With hitches tucked into the rear bumper there really isnt anything protecting the body from a fender bender turning into an expensive fix. What do you guys use to improve your odds? Trailer balls? Hitch spare mounts? Other? I need some ideas for my traffic commutes. Thanks.

I like the hitch ball but also see promise in a pintle hook mount as the base for a couple square tubes or something.

Not that anyone would care, but it is illegal in some states to have your hitch in the reciever if youi are not towing. Just sayin.

Some states I’ve heard have that law as well. Here in New York it is legal to keep your hitch in. I keep my hitch in for the same reason posted previously. This is ANCIENT but the only thing I found in the issue locally.

(August 10, 2010 - Albany) - New York State Police Traffic Services has recently received numerous inquiries regarding the legality of trailer hitch receiver use when not actually towing anything.

Despite persistent rumors, it is not illegal to leave the trailer hitch ball mount in the receiver on the vehicle when not towing."

If that were true it would mean all bike racks, cooler baskets, spare mounts, and rascal carriers would be illegal too. It just doesnt seem like an issue as long as your plate and lights arent blocked.

What about a 6" drop receiver and install it upside down? If you can still open your back door, anyway. You might do enough damage to those parking lot clowns to teach them a lesson...

Typically, the GoRhino brand has a good reputation and they've been around for quite some time, so I'd assume they are good. They are welded and should be able to take a good load when standing on them, so most likely stout enough I'd say... besides, the intention is to take light impact in a parking lot or what not, not a 90 mph rear crash, lol!

There are other similar products on Amazon as well, so check them all out.

My purpose is to prevent lots of damage in a low to medium speed rear end from a distracted driver in traffic. You know 15mph to 0 some idiot texting. Im in stop and go for way too long.
