I am picking up a mustang from Houston, I live in DFW area, so it will be 200+ mile drive.

1) what hitch do you recommend? (I currently have 3000lb max for towing my small utility trailer so I need something beefier)

2) anything else I i need?

Thanks everyone!

What is the weight you are towing? That will let us know how to advice you. Also open or enclosed trailer? The trailer will tell you which ball size you will need.

4k plus the weight of the trailer puts you way over the 3k limit. Are you using the factory hitch and just have a 3k ball and stinger? A beefier one is cheap.

I was asking what hitch I need and any recommendations... does brand make a difference? Etc I only bought that hitch back when I got the small trailer.

You will need to figure your drop. Then go to Amazon or eTrailer to get one. Get one rated for at least 7000-7500 lbs.

I like Curt personally, but Husky and Reese are also good.

Another option is to get one that can be adjusted to vary your height.

I guess I am dense.

Uhaul installs hitch's which is what I would do because I hate laying on my back trying to install them.

If you just need the receiver and ball, then what size ball does the trailer take? Also what size hitch does your EX have.

Thank you, I will check those out and thank you for reminding me about checking the drop!

Unless you have the heavy duty towing package you are likely going to be over weight. The standard towing is only 6000 lbs. So be careful most car trailers are 2 5/16 balls on the hitch.

You should not have a problem with the hitch setup that came with the vehicle. I've towed 2 different Corvettes with my old 2006 Expedition, with HD tow package, with no problems. You just need to get the correct ball and receiver, and also the correct drop. Check the height of the trailer when level and the ball size.

If you are renting a open trailer U-Haul can set it all up for you. Towed my 64 convertible 3,200 many time with them. No problem, I have a 2014 with HD Towing package. Different story if you are borrowing one from someone.

Besides the transmission cooler, what's the difference, equipment wise from the standard and the HD towing package?

At 6000lbs you are at the point you would require a weight distributing hitch. Below that it isn't required but is recommended.

the only real towing I have done with mine (non HD tow) was a car on a trailer and the drive train was more than up to the task, but I do wish I had a weight distribution hitch. The one size fits all design of the UHaul wheels up car hauler resulted in the center of gravity being a bit farther forward than I liked and my backside was a bit squirly for my taste, but a good WD hitch would have taken care of that. For the record, I was close, but I don't think I was over the 6k limit (I did not weigh the setup.)
