Keep in mind that if the “step” (rail) was damaged - sounds like it was from your description - that the factory replacement comes in prime and will need to be painted.
If you can swap the parts out yourself, a local body shop should not charge more than a couple hundred to do the paint work - depending on color / materials cost.
I have $1,000 deductible on our vehicle policy, so I would rather buy the new assembly, have it painted and swap it out myself than make a claim , which may increase your policy cost and will brand the vehicle with an accident, but if you have a much lower deductible, the thinking would be different.
