Changed my oil today and used motor-craft synthetic blend 5w 20. good stuff. but why did they mount the oil filter ABOVE the front axle!? my hand is all busted up now from fighting with stupid wrench and filter now and im really considering getting an oil filter relocation kit from summit racing for next time.

i always keep sayin the same thing but its really not that bad if you go at it from the front with a ratchet and oil filter socket. i saw a guy that mounted his right behind the front bumper on driver side i was kinda jealous lol

Mines behind the bumper too. Really easy to get at. Maybe not enough people were going to the stealerships for service, so they moved it to a more un-user friendly location.

could be. super easy to get to when its behind the bumper. put the pan under the oil pan. let it drain. plug it. move it to the filter. undo it. let it drain. super easy!

I gotta see some pics. Mine is on the driver's side of the engine, right above most of the suspension. I've never heard that other Expeditions had them located differently.

Also, who's done a relocation? Pics?

ill take pics tomorrow. gotta go work! haha :blah:

Thanks, panda. I'm looking forward to them.

If its cheap/easy to do the relocation, I just might do it.
It is always a pain to get the oil wrench up there around the can.

If I remember right, the earlier ones had it mounted behind the front bumper, but in later years, they moved it to on the block to save a few bucks. I also believe that it is also related to the "heavy duty" package. THe heavy duty package has an oil "cooler" added to the truck, where a truck without this package more than likely has the filter on the side of the engine.

I use the "cooler" term loosely. Essentially they are flowing engine coolant through a box that the oil also flow through on the other side of a metal divider. But, keep in mind that the cooler lines that the coolant flow through are both on the same coolant hose located 4" apart. So, the amount of coolant that flows through the cooler is very minimal. So, the cooling is more of a "feel good" thing in my opinion. Once I saw this, I removed the remote oil filter assembly and went back to mounting the filter on the side of the block. It isn't that bad, just have to learn how to lay on your side, reach up through the suspension with your left hand and out it comes. But then, having the lift and big tires on my truck makes it a lot easier. I'm also the one that drains the oil directly into a 5 gallon gas can via my check valve drain line I have on the oil pan.

trans-dapt makes a filter relocation kit. for 55 bucks i think its well worth it. my hand is all cut up and my knuckle is bruised from when the ratchet and filter wrench slipped off and i punched the axle. top it all off the filter was an ac delco filter, now its a motor-craft filter fits much better lol.

mine is also behind the bumper... also my 97 F150 was in the same spot....

my only problem is when you undo the drain plug the oil runs right onto the cross member... so I have to take a piece of cardboard and fold it to make a channel for the oil to run down otherwise oil goes everywhere

I love the location of the filter behind the bumper. The filter on my 2009 or 10 tundra. Is actually on top of the motor. It was serviced a few weeks ago at the dealership andthe next day the battery died, so popped the hood to jump it and they left an oil bottle in there and it got wedged in the pulleys!

Mine is behind the bumper also, I was doing some reading online and the reason it is there is because it was part of the "heavy duty" trailering package that included larger oil and tranny coolers. Also if you have this package, the Expy will hold nearly one extra quart of oil.
