Don't actually have an Expedition yet, but I'm planning on it as soon as this piece of crap Chevy truck that I currently own is paid off in a few months. So I'm here to learn about the Expedition, particularly the 3rd or 2nd Gen.

I used to be a lifelong Chevy guy. Despised Fords. Probably only because my dad grew up a Chevy guy, and so, I liked Chevys. I would literally feel annoyance at even the sight of a blue oval at one point (WTH). LMAO.

Well finally, I've been burned one too many times by what is increasingly becoming the worst domestic automaker in existence. Unreliable junk. The kicker was buying a total lemon of a Chevy truck brand new and having nothing but problems with it.

I've been warm to Ford the past 12 years, and only got warmer as the years went on, until now I can say that I love FoMoCo vehicles. For the past 12 years, I've been driving P71 Crown Vics at work and they have done nothing but impress the heck out of me. When you drive a car for 12 years, and drive it fast it basically becomes part of you. You know it inside and out. And they've never let me down. After being let down time and time by a Chevy sitting on the side of the road, my work experience has transformed my loyalties. When we recently had our first born son, my wife needed a new vehicle for mom duty. We went and got her a brand new Ford Explorer, and we love it.

But for me, I prefer something RWD (4X4 if possible) and more able to go off the road when I need to than the Explorer. And, my side business when I'm not at work, is aviation photography, and wildland fire photography. So I've been in some pretty hairy areas. Now, with an Expedition I know I'm going to lose ground clearance over my current truck, but I will tackle that later. Right now, I just need to find something that won't break down and get me killed out there in a burnover. Really looking at SSVs as an option. They are beaten at times during their career, but well maintained.

To finish this novel out, I thought I'd show some examples of shots I get out there. Military aviation is fun, but the wildland fire stuff is exciting because of where you have to go to get it. I find myself on cliff faces with my truck all the time. It's a blast.

Thanks Tom. Yep, the most recent generation. It's a great SUV for the street... But even though Ford promotes it as off road capable (usually show the 4WD version crashing through mud and snow in the mountains) I would classify it as more of a crossover type than anything else. I had to take it up a washboarded road one day and it was not happy.

Keep it on the asphalt and its a kick ass SUV though. The V6 is a pretty decent mill -- its more than capable of getting out of its own way.

BTW, friggin A your Expedition is fast. You would have given my old Z28 a run for its money at twice the weight. Awesome.

Thanks. :)

I have an Mid 10 second 89LX mustang I raced for many years before I built my expy.

It is soon to be parted out though and sold. Too many toys.. :(

I am a Ford guy but not to the point where I believe it is superior in any way. Though for bang for the buck I do believe its hard to beat a foxbody mustang.

I appreciate all makes / models of vehicles. Several of my racing buddies at the track ran z28's. Was always fun to run them.. :)

Welcome Aboard & glad you found the site.
Love the Prowler & Hornet shots; reminds me of deployment, albeit a different deck.

Welcome, just my .02 but if you are looking for off-road capability, the 1st gens are solid trucks for that. Not as comfy or powerful, but with the right parts, they can be very capable. They are much more "truck-like" if that makes sense.

I was in the dealership with my grandma one day looking at the new explorers and I asked the salesman if he could explain how the 4x4/AWD system works in a car with a transverse engine. He was not very helpful... Nonetheless I have heard they are good road vehicles as you have said.

Very exciting hobby! Those pictures are amazing! I agree with what FordLand pointed out, the main reason I went with a first gen expy was also because of the family, they just feel more "truck-ish" than the rest. I actually feel they are more comfortable just because of the layout and interior shapes. My favorite body style by far, be it an F150,250, or Expy.

BTW Welcome to our forum!

Thanks everybody. I hear ya on the Gen 1s... You guys have some very attractive looking trucks! My reason for wanting something a bit newer is just because Im replacing a recent truck, wanting to get another recent truck to replace it. That, and with what I do with the fire photography looking current, so to speak has a value all its own. If I was looking at it as purely a fun toy and second vehicle I'm sure Gen 1s would be right there on my list!

So I almost bid on a government vehicle -- a 2008 BLM Expedition SSV 4x4 with awesome ground clearance and 33s (is that suspension a Ford option? I see it all the time on the Fire vehicles but rarely see one for sale that way.) Only 73k miles. Given the fact that you couldn't test drive it, I wasn't comfortable going beyond 10500 and was outbid.

Still looking in the civilian market. Found an 07 XLT that looks very nice, but is standard height. Have you guys seen the lifts that just consist of coil spacers? They're really affordable and kind of what I would like to do. Just a mild lift with 33s and I'd pick up enough ground clearance for what I need to do. $300, and then a grand for some BFG ATs and I'd be set. Any suggestions? I'm not concerned with the lack of travel, just need a bit of ground clearance.

I have a 2nd Gen and it is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I love everything about it and get great gas mileage considering. Also, great pics. I am trying to get on a volunteer fire squad as we speak. Your pics are just more motivation. Also, I worked on F-15 and F-22 airframes while active duty. Always love seeing jets. Thanks for the pics... and WELCOME!
