Timing issues

New member woes: So I know this issue has been on here before but I have not seen one to this extent. My wife was driving her 05 expedition Kr that I just got her for Christmas. Has 177,000 miles but we only got to 400 when she said she was driving and the truck and was slowing down at a stop light, the truck started running rough; made a loud squeal noise like a train stopping and the CEL came on. Good for her she immediately pulled over and called me.

I got there and heard it running rough...sounded like a diesel. I replaced a couple ignition coils thinking she was down cylinders with no joy and ran the code p0022. I got it towed and then did my research and they all sounded like symptoms of a bad vct solenoid. Also had codes p0011, p012, p0021 and loss of compression on cylinders 1-4.

The dealership wanted to take the valve covers and timing plate off to diagnose it. For a mere $600. I told them not to touch it I was going to do the vct solenoids. Well I replaced both of them and still no joy.

So my many questions are these:
Is there another simple fix I can check before I drop a ton of very precious money to get this fixed?
If the deal or was to fix what I assume will be a timing issue what am I looking to spend?
Is it possible it jumped time or bent a valve?

The p0021 code is common on those engines. Google the code and you will find many owners who have had that issue and what has been replaced.

In a nutshell you should replace more than just the solenoids.

The squeal noise and the truck slowing down is whats bothersome. It could be a symptom of oil starvation. Passages inside may be blocked. Dont start the engine! You might cause more damage.

The engines of today are far more complicated than the engines of the 50-60-70's. Where everything was mechanically controlled then it has now been replaced with electronic controls & takes a different approach to diagnosing problems.

The loss of compression on cylinders 1-4 is the more concerning issue. How was that and by whom was it determined?

To answer your questions - you need to determine what changed/failed. In order to do that some inspection will be necessary. You can scope the cylinders and piston tops to look for damage plus pull the front cover to check base timing.

the loss of compression of cyl 1-4 was done by the ford technicians at the dealership. I have since towed the car closer to the house and taken it to a mechanic. Their initial diagnosis is they will have to strip down the engine and see what's going on. Their estimate was "could be anywhere from $1500-$2000 or maybe need to replace the engine" which was bothersome to me considering they're thoughts were already turning to replacing the motor before they even opened it up.
Just bought this stupid thing in DEC for the wife and only got 400 miles before a major overhaul.

just got off the phone with the mechanic; they are saying its a broken timing chain guide, and the phasers need to fixed as well. He is also going to look to see if there is any lifter damage. the quote now is $2300-$2800

Motor is done. Cams are burnt to hell with no lubrication evidence

Need to see the condition of the bottom end & cylinders before saying the entire engine is toast. The heads can lose lubrication if the sprayer gets trash in it and end up with the crap you have.
