Towing Question

Just bought an 2010 Expo XLT, I was curious on how do I can find out the towing capacity for my truck? When I looked at the truck online on the dealers website under all features, it said it could pull up to 9,200lbs. With it stating that I just want to double check it, also if it isn't capable of that weight how would I go about upgrading it to an HD.

if you don't have the owners manual go to owner.ford.com and you can download the manual and any other manuals that would have been in the expy when new

also go to ford etis and enter your vin number and you will find information on what was on the expy when built

from the owners manual your max trailer weight would be 9000 lbs for 4X4 or 9200 lbs for 4X2

Its a 4x2 so according to the brouchre I downloaded regardless of gear ratio I have the capability of pulling the 9,200lbs. Now another question it doesn't have a brake controller or anything so is that something I should add on? Or what are some things I should upgrade to it?

the wiring for a brake controller should be under the dash all you should need is the controller and the connecting harness

look into Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional Tekonsha Brake Controller 90885

go with a either a Prodigy P2. P3 or Primus IQ controller

look at the rear of the expy to see which trailer connector you have either a 4 or 7 pin connector

Okay I'll check it out today. If I have a 4 pin do I need to upgrade to the 7 pin? I read on another thread about a guy trying to convert it.

if you have a 4 pin connector you most likely have the light duty tow package.
Yes it can be up graded to 7 pin

again check on ford etis and you will see what was on the expy as built

Okay thanks Roxy! But with a light duty I wouldn't be capable of that 9,200 correct?

It's going to used to pull a camper the size hasn't been fully determined, though I would say it'll probably be between 22-28ft. I do have some decent towing experience I help my father in law with a 5th wheel. So I have the concept of pulling down, just know I do have to get stability bars for the expo.

for a travel trailer I would recommend a good weight distribution hitch and sway control. You definitely will need a heavy duty tow package you may also want to increase the size of the transmission cooler if one is already installed or install one if there isn't a cooler on the expy.

my best advice would be to talk to a good RV dealer and see what they recommend
also check with your Ford dealer to see what it would cost to up-grade to the heavy duty package if needed but be cautious on what they tell you about towing weights

again check to see what hitch and connector are already on the expy and post that information on the forum

also update your signature as that will help for future information and responses
it can be updated in the USER CP section

Okay good to know. Well once I have the Vin I'll run it and check back here with my findings. I want it to absolutely be safest possible as I will mainly be the one pulling but my wife will maybe have to drive sometimes too.

It has been a pleasure dealing with you as well, you have answered every question I have asked. Thank you for the compliment I appreciate it. I just have learned it helps to be as descriptive as possible it helps get a more accurate answer.

I will say this coming to common sense in the aspect of pulling a trailer. It's better to take your time and get there in 1 piece rather than rush it and hurt your vehicle and endanger your life.

On my 07 with the HD tow package it's rated at 9000lbs for my 4x4. 9200 for the 4x2. Without the HD tow package it is 6000 lbs for both 4x4 and 4x2.

Oh okay. Well after looking at the brochure for the 10 Expo with the 3.31 & 3.73 gears for the 4x2 it shows the max load capacity is 9,200 but again I won't know more details until I search the Vin and find out the exact info for my expo.

OK that clears up the confusion as your original post says 07 other that the tow weights which most likely apply to the 2010 all comments remain the same

Well I'll grab the VIN in a bit and report what my findings. Great thing is, is we probably aren't getting a trailer till beginning of next year so I have time to save and do the upgrades you mentioned above.
