Welcome to the site!!
Someone with more knowledge than me on trannies will be on this soon. Did the tranny come from a 05 Eddie 4x4 same as yours? Replacement parts on some of these can be real finicky as far as same year, model, etc.
Not like the old days when pull one close enough and replace/ go.

Thank you for the welcome . I'm not sure about the year of the replacement tranny . I was is in a bind . Daughter and grandkids 200 miles from home . Cheap and quick repair . Both are r4w70 . That is all I know about new tranny.

Sounds like you paid to swap out a bad trans for another bad trans. Good luck when swapping junkyard transmissions. They are in the junk yard due to being wrecked, bad engine or bad trans.

Does it shift into 4th, OD and reverse manually?

No it will sometimes manually shift to 3rd , but won't stay it shifts back to 2nd .
I'm awear of the danger of junk yard parts . I'm just trying to find out if I may have overlooked something . I'm sure a reman tranny is the cure .

Usually when you get a junkyard transmission, the junker pulls the pan and removes the filter. Were you charged for a new filter with the fluid when it was installed? Maybe the wiring in the connector to the trans isn't seated/connected properly either in the connector itself or inside the pan where it connects to the various solenoids. Like stamp asked, can you manually shift through the gears?

4r70w tranny's are pretty bulletproof. Simple straightforward 4 speed tranny. Sounds like an electrical issue,or as stamp said, bad junkyard trans. No third gear, direct clutch. When it does go into third, does it feel like it's slippoing?

I had the shop that installed the new tranny , drain , flush and replace the filter .
When the tranny is in 2nd the rpm climbs to about 1800 then shift to third . Rpm drop to 900 then right back to 2nd no time to fell any slippage .

It's been a long time since I've worked on one of those, but that sounds electrical to me. You'll need a good shop to diagnose that issue. An internal speed sensor dropping out or a solenoid not avtivating properly. Could even be a pcm reprogram for an updated transmission. At least in my opinion it's not a burnt clutch pack issue. Good luck.

It also sounds electrical to me but it could also be in the MLPS sensor.
I had one go out on a 94 AOD-E model which was actually installed in a 92 car and it had some weird jumping into neutral and not shifting into 2nd issues. Replace the sensor and the new upgraded pigtail that the switch pigtale that they switched the terminals in and it was fine after that.
Find someone that knows someone who works at a transmission shop or has the expensive diagnostic Hardware to watch what the transmission is doing as it's being Road tested. You have to have a friend because otherwise a shop will just want to tell you it needs a rebuild.

I'm guessing programming. I was in a similar situation with a Charger. The tranny went bad so I got a junk yard one installed. When I went to take it home I couldn't get past 45mph. I took it back and the tcm needed to be reprogrammed.

If the new transmission is indeed defective, it should have some kind of warranty. Mine was 6 months. More than enough time to determine if there's any problems with it.

I don't think an 05 really has any programming. It may very well adapt to your driving a little bit but not nearly as sophisticated as the newer ones.
Short of resetting the computer codes and taking the battery cable off for a few minutes I don't think anything else would affect it.

if you drive with the overdrive off does it have the same symptoms? perhaps your replacement tranny has the "lost overdrive" problem...

I had a similar problem, but mine wouldn't go into 3rd at all. I was driving along and it just dropped down to 2nd and wouldn't shift any more. It's an 05 with 105K on it now, 99K at the time (last August). I had towed a camper about 150 miles to the beach and been there a week -- the night before we were coming home the trans acted up! Stored camper and drove it home in 2nd gear, just didn't run over 3000 rpm (right at 50 mph) all the way home. Turned a 2 hour trip into 3, but got home safely. Turned out to be a snap ring inside the trans that let go, a common occurrence according to the shop I took it to. They installed a lot of upgraded parts, including a spiral stainless ring in place of the iron snap ring. Seems like it was about $3500 total for the rebuilt trans, dropped truck off and picked it up three days later. They didn't rebuild mine, but installed one they already had rebuilt... saves time, and it's a common enough trans to keep a couple on hand and rebuild when shop is slow. Gets customers out faster.
