I'm struggling with this harmonic balancer kit, is it okay for the stem to go into the keyway or should it be utilizing the old bolt to press onto? the bolt there doesn't work, and the stem does fit but i'm just not sure if that damages anything inside the crank keyway? ive only put it in hand tight so far because i'm afraid to damage something in the keyway if it's not meant for it.

Is your kit missing the crankshaft contact piece ? The small pointy bushing piece that goes between the long puller bolt and the crankshaft.

yeah it doesn't have a cone piece on the cone, i think maybe because the rods they give you are pivoted already? not sure. mine doesn't use that older style of puller by the way, it is the 3 jaw type with different size rods that rest inside the tension bolt which presses against the inside of the crankshaft keyway.

i just don't know if that's safe or not.

You don't normally use a 3-jaw puller on a harmonic balancer. Some will be damaged doing that. I've seen that one on Amazon for the GM motors, but I would still stick with the old reliable standard puller. I don't like the idea of stuffing a rod into the crank bolt hole.

FordTech's video links two types of pullers, one is with the three bolts sticking into the pully which does not workfor mine, and the second is with the 3 jaws. he links a green one from OEM Tools on amazon who for some reason won't ship to my home, BUT when you look at the two they are basically the same as what I had bought. my crank pully doesn't have the three front facing thread holes for bolts, so it needs to be a jaw puller topull it forward.

the mystery is rather or not to stuff the push rod into the crank keyway hole, it's nerve racking for sure....

You should have threaded holes in your balancer. The holes are 3/8" coarse thread. About a 4" bolt works.

nope, mine doesn't have that. which explains why FordTechMakuloco links two types, one which uses the three bolts and one which is a jaw puller, it's a pain in the ass actually cause you have to use the jaws to sit behind little groove on the pulley triangle pieces, and only stay with tension.

welp, I guess it was designed to go into the keyway hole haha because I just did it by hand and it didn't really take much, popped the crank pully right off of there.
