So I have a 2004 Ford Expedition with the 5.4 l V8 and on my vin number it says I have an l-type engine. I cannot find my VVT solenoids anywhere. Are they underneath the valve covers on my specific engine? I tried to look everywhere online and everything showed that there would be holes in the valve covers where the VVT solenoid will go through but I don't see anything there nor do I see anything on the front of the engine when I look. Where could they be at? My vehicle will start but it will sputter out and die after a minute or two. It starts pretty strong and then over the next minute starts going through phases where it idles down and then begins sputtering. I feel like I can hear a solenoid clicking underneath the hood right as it starts to sputter and die. What could this be?

Probably hearing the PCM relay in the fusebox there at the passenger kick panel. That thing flips out when the fuel pump relay is failing.
Unless you could hear the AC clutch relay, but it's in a box behind the left headlight. Turn off your AC and see if you still hear a relay.

I'm not sure. I live in apartments and haven't had the money to put into it so it's just been sitting there. Now the battery is dead and I need to take it somewhere to get it charged. That way I can run the codes and see exactly what I'm getting and go from there.
