I also agree. I don't think any of them ever even hit 17 or 17.2 even with a light foot. I was just saying the other day though that it wouldn't take but a few of the similar modifications to the old style to get the same fuel mileage the new ones are getting. Part of my complaining about the twin turbos and all that. Because that's what I do best... Complain. I always say, go with what you know.

Complaining is a natural event for most of us including me.I can’t imagine getting 12 miles to the gallon.I try and keep the tach around 2000 or under if I can.Anything past that and she gets pretty thirsty.

I have a 2016 Roadglide Special.Infotainment center says 51 miles to the gallon.Paper and pen tells me 45.

Your Harley weighs roughly 750 pounds, and I'm assuming 90 horsepower if it's stock. Now except for additional torque of Expedition, try propelling your Harley with 2 1/2 times the horsepower, but increase the weight times eight. Add 2 more tires for rolling resistance, and you can see why your Hog dropped down to a best of 15.5 highway. Also newer Harley's run light-years cleaner than say even a 2000 model with a single carb. Maybe if their still making some version of the Large SUV in 2040, it will get 45 mpg!

Last night driving from Indiana to Chicago I got 12.7 mpg @ 80mph cruise control via overhead computer display.

I think it’s lying.

At 80, your fuel mileage will drop. Especially if your running a 2 valve motor. Drop your speed down to 65-68 mph, and your mileage will jump as much as 2 mpg.

2000 XLT 4.6 4x2......In 2018 it overall averaged 15.3(best tank was 19.1, worst tank 12.6). I mostly drive it around Dallas tollroads, but sometimes to the farm(about 200 mi round trip). Not sure about all models in Gen-1, but the 2000 w/4.6 has a 3.31 rear end...terrible for towing, but great for highway cruising.

Just for grins I went back 5 years to check the numbers. Overall avg 14.8(best tank was 18, worst was in the 12's). I was actually expecting the earlier #'s to be a bit better since I haven't done any TB maintenance over that time, only changed 2 or 3 COPs. However, I did change from the aweful Goodyear tires to Bridgestones that next year.

its the gearing which causes the bad highway miles
the 4r100, at least, does not like anything above 50-55mph

the triton 330, its pretty consistent with fuel injecting, not much difference between idle and WOT.
so its the RPM which plays the largest role in MPG

My 2000 with 3.73 gears, four wheel drive, and too big 20" tires, still will eek out 15, if I take a long trip. That's with my cruise control set at 65-67 mph. In town horrible, at 10.3. I'm running street Kumho tires.

well everything is governed by the induction of air, i should say,
RPMs low and throttle just a hair open,
i get 22+ mpg in city driving, at night, and make all the green lights

sweet spot is around 30-35mph

it also helps to lower fuel pressure, which im assuming mine is at a lower level
the injector seems to operate perfectly though, so maybe not.
my exaust smells like hot hair and nothing else once warm, i have very good sense of smell. so everything is probably working in top shape, despite the fact the engine consumes about 1qt. oil every 250-500miles
no idea where that oil is going.

i do push the engine hard alot, during the day, it gets up and goes real quick.
high RPMs do it. when i keep them low, it doesn't really consume any oil at all.

Just a reminder that fuel economy will suffer in (extreme) cold weather. I get about 14.3 MPG during the warmer months, but this particularly cold winter has dropped me down to 12.9 MPG.

2017 xlt el running cheap fuel. From Columbus to Waverly. Around town last 4k avg was 12.4 mpg. It was nice to see it getting over 20 on a road trip.

Currently, I'm at 17.2 over the last (mostly highway) ~450 miles. That includes a ~70 mi drive today with 2,300 lbs onboard. Normally, I'm around 15.2-15.3 average for combined highway/local driving. Not bad for an 8 y/o beast.

I just did another drive from Chicago to Cleveland. My 2017 XLT EL averaged 18.5 give or take. Most of the time I had the cruise control set at 73-75mph.

that's better than my 97 got... Best it ever got on the highway for a long distance was 12.9, and didn't go above 73 MPH, and averaged around 11 with a combo of city/highway.

I divided the replacement gallons by mileage at each top off and I get 16’ and 17’s which I know is wrong. Especially cruising at 75mph.

The only thing I can think of is that after the gas spicket clicks off I squeeze more gas in until it clicks off again. I can get between 4/10’s 8/10’s more.

I have found that there are to many variables in each leg of the trip but it all washes out in the average for the whole trip.

FYI: my old truck (02 XLT 4.6 2x4 expedition) when it clicked the gas pump off I could get another 8 gallons in by slow filling.
The tanks are 30 gallons when on empty you should be able to get close to 30 gallons in. (I have got 29.7 gallons in before miles to go was at 0 for over 15 miles) Trying to get to the cheaper gas in SC on I95 boy was I puckered but it is nice to know on level terrain I can go that far.
On my present truck (02 EB 5.4 4x4) I get an extra 3 gallons in after the pump clicks off.
And before any of you click off on that messes up your EVAP system, your probably right my truck is special. I do it at every fill-up because that is the way I check my mileage.

My MPG stays in the 14-15 range and I am heavy footed driver 87 octane never run premium never use boosters, foam or any additives.

If you hate going to get gas or want to get a little farther between fill-up's try this when the pump clicks off look at the gallons and tenths. slow fill (barely have the pump on) until you fill it up to the top(you can see gas in the top of tube). Note: pump will keep clicking off during this prosses. If you get in another 3.4 gallons in you know you can put another 3 gallons in all the time. or at least that is what I do every fill-up and never had any problems with EVAP system.

Yup. I’ve done that but only when outside temps are cold. For some reason in summer I have trouble topping it up all the way to the opening.

When I’m not traveling I go to a non ethanol gas station that’s about 25 mi away highway drive. I damn well take my time to slowly fill the tank till it just about overflows. That’s when I get the full 30 gals.
