What is the purpose of the flip-up tailgate window?

I second the ventilation for the dogs when parked.

Allows loading smaller items without raising and lowering the whole rear hatch/door. Quick and easy. All doors must be unlocked in order to use. The bump to the left of the hatch handle will open it without going around the vehicle. In my case. It keeps my over active dogs in the back without raising the hatch in a busy parking lot.
