All,

Great forum you have here...i hope to have more reason to post once I purchase an Expy...

I have narrowed the search down to a used 2001 Expy XLT 4x4 (with trailering package, cloth, and 3rd seat, Red if I can find it).

I am upgrading from a 1993 Explorer and need more space....

Anything particular to look out for with above mentioned Expy?(used 2001 Expy XLT 4x4 with trailering package, cloth, and 3rd seat, Red if I can find it).

I know it may be strange, but i wanted to decide on which expy first (as i kind of have my heart set on it), then test a like equiped/like cost tahoe/yukon, Durango, and maybe Sequoia just to double check...i feel good about the Expy, and know much more of it than the others.

If you found yourself in the same quandry let me know what you discovered or thought.

Thanks for any feedback.

Drive them all. I looked for nearly a year before deciding on a 2000 XLT. Read the fourm threads in here for options like 5.4 versus 4.6 engine, "gadget" options and other items. I went with the 4.6 engine because the deal I got on the used one I could not beat.

I drove a Durango. It was both my wife's and my choice until doing a little research. Threre are forums on all makes of SUV. A common problem with Durango was front supension problems. Not to mention that the average MPG was 8-9 city and 12-13 highway.

I also drove the Yukon, but you have to go with a late model one to get the third seat. Also, a freind of ours has one and the dealership's mechanic drives it more than they do.

How many kids and how much more room do you want? The new body style Explorer has three seats or you could add an aftermarket third to yor explorer.

I am definately starting my search now and maybe looking at purchase a couple of months from now, however it could wait for another year if i go ahead and drop some money on the explorer to fix a couple things (4WD shift motor replacement, sagging driver door; fix front brakes; tune up)

I will push for the larger engine as i live in colorado springs and we are at 6000 feet already and we only go higher when camping

The durango seems nice, but i have yet to meet a friend who has one and 'loves it'...they all seem to have something major or semi major that needed repair...i will drive one and check them out

the yukon/tahoe seems nice but i too hear from friends that they have to deal with problems more than expected

I think that the new explorer will just be too small with a third seat...i mean the expy third row seat seems tight enough and useful really for just younger folks..I would like to be able to put 2 kids in the far back seat, two adults in the middle seat, and two up front....all in greater comfort than the exploer could

All said... are there any peculiarities with the 2001 expys that i need to avoid? I am just unsure if there are years better than others or ones that are more problematic....

Thanks for the feedback!

Test all you want, But here is some things you may want to chew on. The Federal Gov. Aka The US Border Patrol uses expeditions. Oh yeah they have some dodge and cheavys, (even getting some hummers in a few weeks) The three durangos here in west texas have been in the shop most of the time, all under 40k miles Actually they are all at this time still in the shop. Two tahoes are going good. The 47 expeditions are all doing well. Its been the number one choice for the last few years. Its also the one who holds up out there where there are no roads.
