I've got a 2011 Expy with 94k on the clock. For several months I have had a ticking noise at start-up that lasts 5 to 10 seconds. I have read on this forum that it might be either a camshaft issue or a header leak.

In any event, will the 100,000 mile power train warranty cover this?

Thanks for your responses.

Do you have an extended warranty?

No, and after looking again at what I DO have it's only good for 60,000 miles. Looks like I am way out of luck.

By the way, I am looking at several low mileage '17 Limiteds to replace the '11. How do you like yours?

If it lasts 5-10 seconds it’s probabaly a bad timing chain tensioner. All it takes is for it to starve for oil once since all ford uses is plastic for the tensioners on modern engines.

JEx07, how much (ball park) to fix the chain tensioner issue?

I am not sure what kind of filter is in there now. Although I've always used Mobil 1 I have not been as consistent with the brand of filters. I do not, however go for the cheapest ones. Your brand suggestion?

17 has been great! A very good ride and lots of room, but no longer than the pickup I traded in, so similar driving/parking awareness. The Sync 3 is much better than the Sync 2 system in my 15 Explorer.

If it is a tensioner it depends, a timing job ranges on these engines drastically mechanic to mechanic. FordTechMakuloco on youtube charges about $1,600 for the job I think he mentioned.... the reason I mention the filter is these engines will clatter and tick on startup for few seconds if they have cheap filter like a fram or store brand. They don’t like filters without a good anti drainback valve and in startup the motor could starve for oil for a few seconds.

The cheapest filter is stock Ford Motorcraft, price fluctuates $3 - $4 at walmart... really no opportunity to save further on filters & probably no reason to stray from recommended original when it's so affordable

Definitely agree with the others...good filter with a good anti-drain back valve is a must.

My initial thought reading what you describe is a lifter noise or a tappet noise. There's every possibility that one of your hyd lifters has become clogged.....Rislone to clear or deal...won't hurt anything.

If it gets louder under heavy load (pulling a trailer) it is an exhaust manifold leak. Not covered unless you have the extended warranty.

It didn't get louder while pulling 8k trailer. It had been ticking for maybe 2 or 3 years. Tried oil treatments like Lucas, didn't work.

As of today I no longer have that problem. I traded it for a brand new '17 Expy Limited. The evaluator never even noticed the ticking. It will go to auction.

Price for Expy- Group 301A and blindspot options- $48k. Was that a good deal??

Very good deal for a new Expy...and you either paid cash or received the 0% APR they advertised a few weeks ago.

The 5.4l does not have lifters or tappet. It is overhead cam. It has cam followers. My 2000 had a broken stud, exhaust manifold leak. It sounded like a tick and went away after warming up. Ford manifolds are covered under the emission 8/80,000 warranty. The timing chain sounds more like a rattle.

What's a pretty slow tick-tick-tick sound that DOESN'T seem to go away, then? About two ticks per second idling I'd say?

Audible with hood up, less audible standing in front of truck, inaudible from cabin...

Temps stable, fresh coolant fresh oil new plugs new coils, no codes

That is normal. Realize most modern engines tick like crazy. My dads 2016 6.2L ticks the same as my 07 expy. My buddies F-150 Ecoboost has the exact same tick as well. Modern engines have loud injectors and with VCT tick away. Camphaser problems are a knock in the top end and it will sound like a diesel. It would be a heavier clicking if you had an issue and it would be audible in the cab.

Congratulations on your new ride. Drive it in good health.

That's how I fixed my ticking sound in the engine. :) That's a great price,

Well that's not 100 percent accurate on the overhead cam part, true it doesn't have a lifter like a pushrod motor, it uses cam followers, along with oil fed valve lash adjusters, that are similar to regular lifters in the sense that they have to be functioning proper. What happens on a lot of 3 valves is the back cylinders get starved for oil, due to low level, or partial failing oem pump. They seize in their bores, then the noise and performance party starts. Back to earlier, regular maintenance, proper cooling alleviates a lot of these issues.
