Hi all. 2003 expedition with 5.4 L
Winter is almost here, I have no heat. Been noticing a tapping when I change temperature, which goes away after a while. I just replaced thermostat, and engine temp is good. I replaced the blend door actuator, but still have a tapping noise and still no heat.

Is there more than one blend door? As in a separate one for heat and cool, and separate one that changes direction of air? Air will change from vent to floor and defrost just as it should. AC blows cold, and works great from rear air vents in roof as well, but no heat from front or roof vents what so ever.

my thoughts are either another blend door I’m not aware of, or flushing heater core.

the blend door I replaced was the one under the radio, on top of the AC Box

In my 2011 there are at least 3 blend doors I can think of offhand. There are probably several on the 2003 also.

Edit : I flushed out the heater core today. Lots of junk came out. After this, had heat. However, I changed the temp back to AC, and 60 degrees, got cold, and now I can’t get my heat back. I replaced the actuator under the front dash yesterday, took a look at the blower motor in the rear, looks like there is a separate heater core, and seen 2 actuators back there.

now I’m a little lost... guessing either I got the wrong actuator, which I wouldn’t know how because they look exactly the same, or the blend door on the inside is broken?

There are 2 actuators on the front and the rear. One for the temp and one for the direction. Which one did you replace? I believe they are the same just in diffeerent places.

On my 2003 F150 I cut a hole in my AC box to fix the blend door instead of pulling the whole dash out, I then sealed it up using AC tape. Never had an issue out of it in 5 years.

got it. I replaced the one directly under the radio, behind where the AC controls would be. Apparently the wrong one. Where the heck is the 2nd one?

Did you watch FordTech's video on replacing the front temp actuator ? Do you have split zone front AC ? ( separate driver / passenger front temp control...). There are two actuators if you have split zone front AC, but only one if you have the standard ( one temp switch ). If you have split zone AC there is a actuator on top, and on the bottom of the HVAC box. Single zone only has the actuator up top.

have not seen this video, definitely will watch. Yes I have dual climate control, so this is probably my situation. That’s gonna be fun to get to.

You can pull out the center console and get to the lower one if you have the dual front system. Is it still clicking ? So you can identify which one is actually broken.

Awesome I was hoping so. And yes it is still clicking. Definitely feels like it is coming from the area you are describing.
