Aside from aesthetics, is there any reason to fix this? It appears to be a crack in the plastic covering on the metal bar that actually does the work. (I have no idea the formal name or function of this part.)

The same part broke on my 2015 Ford Expedition Limited 4x4 LF door. The dealer would not order the part over the phone, but insisted I come it to have it looked at - then the part ordered (thus requiring two service visits). This was done under the new car warranty.
That is a door check strap. When mine broke, it was impossible to close the door without removing part of the strap so the door could close. I drove home holding the door partially closed, then disconnected the part that I could unbolt.
The replacement door check strap eventually wore out, but did not fracture or break (began clunking loudly when the door opened). It was replaced again under my Ford extended warranty.
The door check strap is designed to permit the door to be opened and “held” in several different opened positions.
