what is the thing infront of the expedition ?

That's an EF5 rated tornado shelter. 1/2 inch steel plate walls and door epoxied and hilti bolted to the slab. I'm getting too damn old to climb down into a shelter and this is easier to roll a beer cooler into to ride out the twisters. Battery powered fans, radio, lights, cell charger, and reclining lawn chairs. Tornado took our house in 1986 and I said I'd be a lil' more prepared if that were to happen again.

Holy shit! That’s cool. I have heard about them but never seen one.

I don’t understand why they don’t just sell the Max and the Max alone. To me the shorty is pointless. With the 3rd row in use on a shorty there is no space for…anything. Just get a 3 row crossover. We have 2 kids and 2 dogs. No way would I ever want anything but the Max. In fact I wish they made it even bigger. I could have used more space recently.

If this was a luxury German brand, the Max would be the standard and they would sell the shorty as a “GTS” version with reduced weight for “added dynamism” and charge an extra $20k.

The additional benefits of the Max (usable cargo space, wider rear doors, extra fuel capacity) were a no brainer for me given the relatively small price premium.

Don’t forget the wider rear doors on the max. Makes getting into the 3rd row even easier than it already is.

ah I didn’t know that about the doors. That’s cool!

For me I have the short version and although people say “just get a crossover” (I was one of those people a few years ago), no crossover has the interior volume, cargo space, towing capacity and overall road dominance. They come close in some areas but the overall package isn’t there (VW Atlas, Chevy Traverse for example).

I can’t comfortably fit the extra foot in my garage so at the time the best decision was the short version with two kids and a small dog.

Now with a 3rd kid on the way… it’s making me rethink that garage space but there are plenty of people out there with smaller SUV’s and 3 kids so I’m wondering how they do it!

I think everyone on this forum can agree we are somewhat of an anomaly of a grouper of people. We have excess. We spent excess money, wanted excess size, etc. When given the opportunity to go BIGGER most of us take it haha. I started this post because I was curious if I really did need bigger… just because it’s an option, do I need it…

Too big not every one lives in the wide open prairie where one can easily have a giant prairie schooner lol
Two kids, 1.5 dogs and the shorty is perfect for us even on camping trips we easily fit. 3 kids I’d just stack them on the bench 2nd row. 4 kids? Yeah the long version starts look more appealing.
