2022 Timberline Tail Lights

What's up everyone, hope you're all doing well. I have a '22 Timberline on order that should be here in the next week or two as it is currently in transport according to my dealer. My question is, does anyone know why the Timberline isn't offered with the LED Tail lights, but still has everything else top of the line when we added the 501A package? Kind of irritates me to just now find this out, especially when the Limited Stealth Performance package is the same price as ours but comes with the new LED tail lamps.

I ordered a loaded up 501A too (minus RES and engine block heater) Noticed the LED tail lights were not included and they certainly do look like a slick upgrade. Don't beat yourself up about it... I'd be more irritated if I ordered a Platinum and couldnt get a 440HP engine. In doing some quick digging, the new LED tail lights wont be plug and play, so I'll likely swap in a few LED bulbs and see if/when a trusted tech has a confident idea of how to retrofit.

While both tail lights do have some LED components, the "New LED" tail lights referred to here on this post do not come in the Timberline. Attached are tail lights from a White Timberline compared to a White Platinum. I think I'll have taillight envy especially at night, which I do prefer over cases of horsepower envy and off road envy.

That said, I thought about it and decided to keep my cheapo old style ones. I broke a taillight last month and ended up paying $300 to replace it. The LED ones are above $800. You also have to change the whole assembly if your LED stops working, rather than a $1 bulb replacement.

The LED ones do look cool though

I was concerned about the hot resistor pack at first, but then he explains in the description that you can do without it if you use Forscan. Great info!

Yeah, too expensive for just two plugs and a resistor. Add to that $2,000 for flimsy OEM taillights and I decided to pass.

Rather than considering a swap of the entire rear light assembly, why not just swap out the incandescent bulbs themselves? I traded in a '21 Expy Limited w/Stealth package, so I know how good the OEM LED assemblies look, but, changing out just the bulbs would make a big difference as well.

The trick is simply finding a good third party LED replacement "bulb" that won't overheat/trip codes/etc.

I've not yet done anything regarding the bulbs. I'm anxious to swap them out, but what I really want to know is:

1. If I were crazy enough to spend the $$$ on the entire OEM LED housings (like what I had on my '21 Limited Stealth), what's different about those vs. these on the '22 Timberline. Did the '21 LED housing have some sort of built-in resistor(s)? Or were the bulbs themselves some sort of CAN bus bulbs (except of course the reverse lights, which were just regular incandescents)?

This wouldn't be my first rodeo with retrofitting/swapping incandescent bulbs for LEDs, but it seems to be hit-or-miss with manufacturing quality. Just thought about this... maybe I should go take a look at the FRONT signal LEDs on my current '22 Timber rig, and see what Ford has used there.... maybe that would shed some light on this subject.

I thought I read that only the Timberlines and Platinums have the Zone lighting. The platinums don't have a blacked out tail light like the Timberline and Stealths do.

Well I've played around with the zone lighting, and unless I'm mistaken, the "rear zone lighting" is just turning on the reverse lights (I can't check right now b/c my Timber is in the shop getting PPF applied). Not a big deal though, whether incandescent or LED.

Im interested in this as well. I just got my XLT so I have regular tails as well. I've bought Spyder-LED tails with the load resistors built in for my previous 2 Tahoes, but I have never just swapped the bulbs to LED and installed the load resistors myself. I had a friend do it to his truck, and it worked, but the load resistors almost overheated and melted so I am definitely cautious about that here.
