I've been really disappointed in my 2019

I have to say I'm a Ford guy and come from a Ford family. Our 2019 4WD EXP has really tested my dedication. We bought it with 12K miles in 2021, and it's been a steady stream of headaches. It now has 120K miles.

-3 Wheel hubs and speed sensors
-AC Compressor
-Busted heater hose on the side of the interstate
-Replaced SYNC module
-Noisy, obnoxious sunroof
-About to change the thermostat because the fan blows at warp speed
-The LED headlight strip just went out
-Of Course, the cam phasers are rattling
-The transmission shifts erratically at times

I'm a guy that like to fix things myself, but I recognized the complexity and expense of the some of the possible failures. I ended up getting a base ESP to at least cover the engine and transmission for another 36K.

I feel for all of you dealing with big problems. Our 2019 Expedition has been pretty much flawless. Knock on wood, no transmission issues, no cam phaser rattle either. Other than luck of the draw, perhaps servicing it at 5,000 mi intervals might have helped.

In the past and after a few years of owning a vehicle, I would get the itch to upgrade to the latest/greatest; but that's not true anymore as the latest are not necessarily any greater. The only feature that I wish ours had is the speed sign recognition feature. Nice to have, but not worth making payments again. We're only at 28K miles and have another two years and 70K miles on our ESP for something to go wrong. Then, who knows?

Well, I have a 2011 w/ only 81K, and it was only at 67K when I bought it in 2020...

It hasn't been perfect, but overall very reliable & sturdy, especially on my occasional trips to the wild blue yonder (backwoods camping, scenic viewpoints etc.. :)

Its a long story...We both retired in our fifties, and bought it right before Covid hit, planning a long road trip (with our dog) from our home in AZ through TX to visit old friends, then to GA and down to Key West to visit wife's family, then up to OH to visit my family and then home.

My wife worked ever since we were married so she missed a lot with our own children. After she retired, she made up for it by watching our grandchildren until they went to pre-school. She got to see their first steps, hear their first words, and toilet train them--a lot that she missed when our children were little.

At the time we ordered the Expedition, the two grandkids she had been watching were in school full-time and we were supposed to be footloose and fancy free again. No sooner had things loosened up after Covid, more grandkids arrived and her watching them was non-negotiable. Hence extremely low mileage and like-new condition. Kids ride in her car.

Fully understand now. I love kids too. Thank you very much for your detailed explanations!

Definitely get your thermostat replcaed. The sunroof is easy to fix.

You need to apply that to your sunroof seals after cleaning them and it'll never ever make noise again. Heater hoses are common, I had mine replaced as a preventative. Cam phasers are a known entity with 3.5L eco, and the trans should be covered under the CDF TSB if you have ESP.

The rest, Im not sure what to say.

I just traded in my 2021 Explorer, purchased in March 2021, that had 10,000 miles on it, so I'm right there with you. I had to do 3 oil changes to keep the warranty alive.

That's me in a nut shell. I usually trade once a year or two. Mine (2018 with 64,000 miles) has been flawless too. I think the tranny issues might be starting, and I've never done cam phasers. Never any problems. I service annually or at 10K (when the DIC says it's time). My ESP expires next month, and at this point, I plan on extending it for 24/24 at least because there's nothing out there that I really want. I figure give it another two years and we'll see.

I took the following steps after buying my 2019 Expedition with 76k miles one year ago. Bought the FORScan dongle to regularly download detailed car status reports. Provide a garage space with a clean floor to park the vehicle when not in used so I could catch early on the appearance of fluids leaking. Also bought the digital Ford service manual and schematic. The digitial service manual is amazing, with the shaded CAD graphics I can see exactly would I should be seeing when I look at the real thing.

Then I went to the local Ford dealership and spoke with the service manager and said: You see that blue 97 4x Expedition outside, it has just over 500k miles. I bought that vehicle in 2000 and only major work I've had was replacing the transmission at 320k miles. Everything else I took care of myself. I love that vehicle. Now I just bought a 2019 Expedition XLT MAX, and I can see that it presents a whole new level of complexity which I'm not of a mind to get into. Which is why I'm here. I want to use your help in getting that 2019 to 500k. I want to work with you to make that happen. I will keep it clean inside and out because I believe cleaning is inspecting such as fluid levels, potential leaks, exposed wires etc., bring it in for all schedule maintenance and even occasionally replace a filter or two. And if I spot a leak or anomaly in the diagnostic reports, I will bring it in straight-away. What I want from you is take a look around the vehicle whenever I bring it for service, you can see in places I cannot and perhaps catch potential problems before they become an expensive "on the side of the road" problems. Since then, I feel I gotten good service, things needing repairs repaired correctly. A joy to drive the two hour trip to another town in the state, two to four times a month.

I bought my 19 Limited in 20 with 10k in miles and besides the cam phasers, it’s been great except the rear entertainment voxx headrest, and I just stumbled on fixing it myself. Other than that it’s been one of the most reliable vehicles I’ve ever owned.

I know 2 master mechanics. One has been in business for 48years and the other 30years, they said the same thing… “basically with that truck all you absolutely have to do is stay on those oil changes like a clock and it’ll be solid as a rock”.
So far that’s held true.

Maybe it’s was a rough day at the plant when they built yours, I’d trade up with that many problems.

With how much money these things cost you should be happy with your purchase.

So, I bought my 2018 limited new at 500 miles 3 shocks were leaking at the first oil change yes at 500 miles. Dealer said they would replace them but they were on a 6 month backlog. So I had a local shop install billstien shocks, huge improvement! Then about 10k miles rear a/c condenser went bad nope Ford wouldn't help. Then the front condenser went bad guessed right Ford played dumb . Now at 88 k the tensioners got really noisy at start up. Ford wants 4 thousand dollars to change them, a friend who retired from Ford engineering said get a bottle of Lucas synthetic additive, after 50 miles the damn stuff made a noticeable difference I'll keep using that because this far FORD HAS BEEN WORTHLESS! But still through it all it's been a pretty good car.

You used Lucas Synthetic Oil Stabilizer?

I have a 2019 with only 20k miles on it. I don't drive it much. Glad I bought the 8 year ESP warranty. I did have to take it in for an inoperable sun roof, which had the same issues on my Gen 2 Raptor. I perform all the interval oil changes and oil filter changes myself.

I think this very much shows it's a luck of the draw. As with every car I've ever owned, I'm extremely diligent with maintenance, even down to hand washing sometimes weekly. Best fluids, best filters, very particular about additives, doing things like 4wheel service long before it's called for, i'm on my 3rd set of plugs, at 57k miles. And yet I've had electrical gremlins, cracked valve covers, brake issues, both front axles, and going on 7 weeks without my rig for tranny issues. To me, it is the luck of the draw, when you look at a tranny that may have parts from 10 suppliers, 20 countries, assembled in another country, shipped to yet another country, where maybe its finally put in a chassis. Anyone of those people in that chain could have had a bad day, lost a bolt, etc. etc. No one around me will buy a Ford after watching my reliability. Kind of embarrasing actually.

Dropped it off at the dealer today to, hopefully, get the can phasers fixed. We will see. The ESP should cover it, but I always expect the worst.

I also told them about the cooling fan regularly in panic mode. I had planned on putting the updated thermostat in it, but I want to see what they say. Thermostate is still covered in the Base ESP.

DW's 2013 King Ranch had nearly 50k by 2016. Then we retired to a small town. It just turned 56k last week. Perfect condition. Both of us are leery of replacing it. My 2020 Lincoln Corsair eats a $300 battery every couple of months this year. Junk. And only 26k.
