I pulled my 16’ 4000lb rv from Portland to Boise on my stock wheels/tires and I averaged 7 MPG… I switched from stock tune to 92 octane tune mid trip with no real changes. I was expecting closer to 10-12 so that was pretty disappointing.

The key to any sort of reasonable mpg while towing is the speed. The mpg will fall in a non-linear fashion as speed rises. Unfortunately, a head wind will cause the same effects. There's no getting around the physics. I drive my other vehicles instead of the Expedition so the fuel savings covers those periods when I need to use the Expedition for something.

Here are my numbers. I bought a used 2023 XLT Max, 36,000 miles, tow hitch, always 2H drive, tires 45 psi. After noticing 12.7 mpg when purchased, I reset it. I drive the speed limit, slow off the start and coast a lot. Always in eco mode. I can’t break 14.9mpg.
Can Ford do a scan to check why higher fuel consumption? If I drove this like a normal car, I’d get 11mpg. Less than my 94 Ford Bronco.

Tips? Suggestions?

If you do alot of stop and go city driving with auto stop/start off then those are good numbers

Not sure if it helps any, my 24 Expy SPP is stock with winter tires on the black rims. I do have 3.73 drive train, keep that in mind. I get 11.1 to 11.8 L/100km highway. If I go lots of short distances and let the truck idle here and there for warm up, she wants about 13.6L/100km.
Using regular or supreme does not affect my fuel consumption for some reason. I tried it.

I’ll just weigh in that this sounds low to me. I have a 2022 304a package with HD tow. 45,000 miles and still have the factory grabbers at 39 PSI cold. I also really watch my acceleration and mostly drive in normal mode. I drive about 25-30 miles a day most days mixed between city and highway and I average about 18.3. I use 93 octane but don’t really know if that makes a difference. I have an AFM air filter and use Amsoil and just changed my plugs. I’m not sure what else might be different but I would be concerned with getting sub 15.

I dunno, sounds like people are getting higher. I’m literally trying on purpose to raise the mpg every time I drive. What is auto stop/start? Does my car have that?

Right? I’m purposely driving slow and coasting to raise the mpg. I have not done anything to the car as I’ve owned it only 2 weeks. I do put in premium fuel. I just don’t know what to check or test to see if there is an issue burning excessive fuel or something. Though maybe a dealer could do a full scan …

I averaged 14-16 MPG towing 9000 miles in mainland Mexico, but much of that was 45 MPH or so, primarily on the toll highways, because we had a slow poke in our caravan who wouldn't go over 50 MPH. my trailer is 4500 lbs loaded, and has rounded edges/corners so its fairly streamline. typically in California, on highways I'm getting 13 towing, and 18 or so not towing, I try and keep my towing around 60-65. speeding definitely knocks the mileage WAY down on long trips. Driving around town here, I'm in the 12-14 range, thats lots of short (1-4 mile) freeway hops, expressways and cross town stop light to stop light. I have HD Tow, I put 18" wheels on my Stealth (came with 22s), the 18's have some cheap Wrangler mall terrain tire on them ("Territory A/T" or something).

Do you remote start it in the mornings? Doing the winter warm up in the driveway will absolutely crater your average mileage.

Yes, you're Expy should have ASS unless it was disabled by previous owner/Ford. Page 185 in my 2019 Owner's Manual discusses this feature.

Mileagae?

One thing that made a massive difference for me was spark plugs and coils. Change them every 60k. Ford will tell you to run the plugs to 100k, DONT unless you want to replace your catalytic converters due to misfires. Same goes for the coils. I noticed a 2-3 mpg increase just doing this using OEM plugs and OEM coils.

I can't make one out in the photo... so just in case... you really need a WD hitch at that weight. It's stipulated as mandatory in the manual for towing more than 6000lb.

Nothing to do with Google at all.

Whilst I trust that you’ve done it many times, the Ford manual disagrees with you. It makes no distinction between any load type; RV, boat, or otherwise. This is what the Ford manual for your vehicle says:

“You must use a weight-distributing hitch for weights above 6,000 lb (2,721 kg), up to your vehicle's maximum towing capacity.”
