I just wrapped up putting a 5 speed in my 98 expedition. I've been driving it the past couple days (with the check engine light on of course) I was wondering if anybody has done this swap and how they cleared the codes from the computer looking for the automatic. It runs almost perfect it has a skip when accelerating (sometimes) and every now and again when idleing it will rev up to around 2000rpm and stay there until I start letting the clutch out. It is the 4.6 2wd and was pretty much a straight forward swap. any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Bust the bulb... kidding. A tuner should be able to do it.

Which transmission did you use? Pics? Install info?

I used the mazda trans from an f150 since I am still running a stock 4.6. I plan on doing a full write up with pics as soon as I get a chance and get rid of the stutter and a shift boot made for my console ( just a huge hole with the shifter coming through it right now).

f150 pedal assembly as well?

I can't wait for the write up... but the stutter/light sound like something a tuner could resolve.

Yes F150 pedals and other than a couple little issues its running awesome. I talked to a performance shop this morning and they said I could either go with a manual trans computer or a get a chip and do a custom tune. So fingers crossed everything should be resolved within the next couple of days.

You don't have to get a chip or replace the computer, your expedition is OBD-II so you can just flash the computer. Call the tuner in my sig, he can probably fix you up pretty reasonably.

hey 985speed I plan on swapping mine over pretty soon but im going with a ZF5 mainly because of one reason the big 5.4 is a M5OD killer hahah but it seems like a fairly simple swap just unbolt auto cut a hole change flywheel and bolt the manual and t case in with a clutch assembly and booster if im missing anything feel free to correct me!

Yeah if I had the 5.4 I would not have used the M5OD but with the ZF I've heard you must do a body lift of some metal work to get it to fit the tunnel. It is a very straight forward and fairly easy swap. My automatic went out and with in a month of working on it around my work schedule it was in and running and that includes rounding up all the parts. I am getting my local performance shop to tune my computer today to clear codes and try and get a little more power out of the 4.6. the main thing I didn't think about before hand was the bolts that bolt the pressure plate to the fly wheel (which were kind of difficult to track down). the only thing in your list is the master cylinder (with resivour) and the hydraulic line down to the transmission. drive shafts are probably going to have to be extended or shortened not sure with the ZF though.
