Hello, I am new to this forum. We recently purchased an 02 Expedition Eddie Bauer with the 5.4L in it. It has 125K on it. I am trying to figure out how I can tell if the water pump is working/pumping correctly since there is no real radiator cap.

The heater only gets luke warm in the front and rear of the vehicle. The previous owner replaced the t-stat and that did not help. I am concerned that the impeller on the water pump might be broken and not allowing the coolant to be pushed through the engine.

The temp guage on the dash reads normal but no hot heat. Yesterday when I drove the truck just for a few miles, I could hear the fan clutch engaged and i think causing the engine to load down.

Is there a way I can check to see of the coolant is flowing or if the water pump is working with out having to take the water pump off?

let the engine get to operating temp. Try squeezing the upper radiator hose when you feel it getting warm/hot as that will restrict the flow thru the hose and you should be able to feel the flow. If this works for you then your heat problem may be clogged heater cores You can also feel the heater hoses when at operating temp to see if the inlet and outlet temps feel about the same

On the hoses that run to the heater cores, which one is the inlet and which side is the outlet? I assume there will be a hose coming from the water pump or the neck of the thermostat going into the heater core?

I believe it is the hose coming off the cross-over on the intake manifold should be passenger side near the alternator

Operating temp, still luke warm heat

Ok, today I brought the engine up to operating temp, where the temp guage was in the middle area on the dash.

I felt the upper radiator hose, it was warm. The lower radiator hose was warm also.

I felt the hose coming from the crossover going in to the heater core, it was very warm. The hose coming out of the heater core is also warm.

Today it was about 95-100 degrees out. I stuck a thermometer in one of the dash vents and turned the vent on and put set the heater on 90. The temp only got to about 120 degrees.

I then drove it around the block with the a/c on then came back and turned on the heater again to 90. This time the temp only got to around 100 degrees.

I ordered a tool to help flush the heater core out. I plan on draining the existing coolant then running some prestone super flush and water through the system to see if it may unclog something.

I see that there are some "quick disconnects" on the hoses that run into and out of the heater core. I assume you just squeeze on the plastic tab then pull off, or do I need a special tool to do that?
