I noticed that the 03 Lincoln Navigator has a 5.4 with 300 HP. My 03 Expedition with a 5.4 has 260 hp. I saw this in Consumer Reports. Does any one know what the difference is between the two engines?

I wonder if it is timed different to peak the torque at a higher RPM. Or if they actually got more torque out of it somehow.

The Lincoln is DOHC (Dual Overhead Cam) 32 Valve and the Expeditions are still SOHC (Single Overhead Cam) Standard 16 Valve. Lincolns have been putting these engines in since 2000.

I'm not sure the 32 valve aspect has as much to do with the HP ratings difference as the compression ratio, and RPMs.

The Nav has a Comp Ratio of 10.5 to 1 and the X has 9.5 I think. Also the Nav HP output is rated at 4750 RPMs and the X is rated at 4500. I suspect if the X was rated at 4750 the HP curve would be a bit higher.

I wonder if a "Superchip" would raise the HP on an X closer to the 300 HP range of the Nav?

Are there any side affects to this chip?

Does is raise the peak torque or move the peak higher in the rpms?

Yes. it will raise torque as well. I have chipped my last 3 vehicles and I am waiting to do my x. There is a significant difference in how they perform with a chip. The down side is you have to buy premium gas which is what I am waiting for. The only side affect I can think of is a voided warranty if something breaks. I haev read that if you have your chip tuner up the line pressure to the tranny it will cause premature glazing of the clutch packs which can cause it to slip and fail. It never happened to me and I had a 4x4 f150, lightning, and explorer.

Well if you had a Navigator or Aviator you'd have to rum premium too. We almost bought an Lincoln Aviator. It required minimum octane of 91.

Now, the Navigator has more torque and power. But it has a lower tow rating. Does anyone know why?

How much does the navigato weigh comapred to the x? What is teh gearing? Tow capacity is based on those two things. If the gvw is the same and the navi weighs more you will have a lower tow capacity.

The NAV does weigh more. I can't remember exactly how much more, I just remember it weighs more. The X and the NAV are basically the same truck. The NAV has more insulation and otrher extras that cause the weight discrepancy.

I am pretty sure that they are both geared at 3.73.

I was thinking it had to do with cooling or something like that.

Heres the scoop:

4x4 EB 5.4L

X - 5686 LBS. - 260HP@4500 rpm 350 lbs.-ft. @2500

4x4 NAV Ultimate

NAV - 5994 LBS - 300HP@5000 RPM 355 lbs.-ft. @2,750 rpm

The curb weight difference would cause the difference in max payload since the NAV weighs more to begin with.

But look at the HP ratings. I wonder what the X would rate in HP if rated at 5000 rpm like the NAV. I'm betting it would be much higher. Same goes for torque. I think this may be a ploy by Ford/Lincoln to make the NAV appear dominate. I'm sure their is a difference but it may be exaggerated with the different rpm scales in rating. It seems they aren't comparing apples to apples here.

If you've ever driven a Navigator you'd see what I mean. We drove a couple and though they are very nice, I didn't feel any awesome difference in power or acceleration.

Probably not since the navi is a dohc motor that is meant to rev higher. On sohc motors they don't rev as high. Think about this too, who drives around at 5000rpm all the time? No one unless you have a rotary engine.

I rode in a navi once and wasn't impressed with the ride quality. I thought it would be like the other lincolns I had been in.

Lincoln is funny about their cars. They always want to have more h/p than the ford counterpart. For instance there is a concept navi with the lightning motor and it has 5 more h/p than the lightning. Why is that you might ask? Because they want to be see as above the rest. I can't wait for the new 3 valve motor to come out so they will have to up the h/p rating of the navi.

True but the point I was making is simply if in a test one were to dyno the X at 5000 rpm versus 4500 like they did what would the results be? I think they would probably show more HP simply from a basic law of physics. The faster the flywheel is spinning the more resulting inertia and thus "power" and torque. It may not be a 40 HP increase but it would certainly be more, no? Am I thinking wrong here?

Strange thing is my X shows 7000 rpm on the tach BUT NO REDLINE! Obviously I would never take it past 5000 but still I've never seen a tach with no redline indicator.

Not necessarily. H/p might drop off after a certain rpm. I have seen dyno graphs of various vehicles and there is a top rpm where h/p is made at. Since the navi is dohc it makes it's peak at a higher rpm than a sohc.

Yeah and they have to justify the reason their cars cost so much more. Remember the old song "Hot Rod Lincoln"?

You may well be right. There is a definitely "peak" HP and torque on any internal combustion engine. Still I'd be curious to know what the 5.4L in the X would rate @5000 rpm. Surely Ford rated that engine at the maximum and DID NOT de-rate it before it reached peak HP.

Yes there is a peak h/p. The 5.4 in the f150 and the x are detuned. If they weren't then why does adding a chip, which advances timing and fuel, make more power. There are some imports that are infact tuned to the max like honda. I guess to keep it luxury they have to up the h/p and make it different.

I'll search another forum I read www.f150online.com and see if there is a dyno that has the h/p at 5k rpm.
